(4,689 posts)In 1728, the first line of the rhyme appeared in a medley called "The Nurses Song". The first known full version was recorded in The Famous Tommy Thumb's Little Story-Book, published in London about 1760. In this book, the rhyme goes:[4]
This pig went to market,
That pig stayed home;
This pig had roast meat,
That pig had none;
This pig went to the barn's door,
And cried week, week for more

(10,775 posts)While we're making the argument that nursing is a profession, this sentiment is extremely unprofessional.
That a nurse would take their personal feelings out on a patient - any patient.
Not the kind of nurse I aspire to be, tbh.
"Never anger a nurse" is . . . I dunno. Kind of gross. Plays well on the Internet. When you see it in the hospital, it usually means some ugliness is going down. People really want to see a pissed off nurse take it out on grandma? I've seen it. I've reported it. It sucks.
In the past few weeks I've been kicked, punched, grabbed, sexually harassed, had racial and sexual slurs thrown at me, spit at, and told to go fuck myself countless times.
That does not get redirected at patients. Ever.

(14,108 posts)All of my patients were treated equally regardless of skin color, sex or sexual preference, age, or money in their pocket. I never asked their political preference nor would it have mattered. My calling was to heal, not harm.
I appreciate the support of the OP for nurses, but this is not the way to show it.

(per Wikipedia):
A professional is a member of a profession or any person who works in a specified professional activity. The term also describes the standards of education and training that prepare members of the profession with the particular knowledge and skills necessary to perform their specific role within that profession. In addition, most professionals are subject to strict codes of conduct, enshrining rigorous ethical and moral obligations.[1] Professional standards of practice and ethics for a particular field are typically agreed upon and maintained through widely recognized professional associations, such as the IEEE.[2] Some definitions of "professional" limit this term to those professions that serve some important aspect of public interest[3] and the general good of society.[4][5]
How is that not nursing?
You know whos not a professional? TSF.

(26,030 posts)Nurses definitely choose whether to go above and beyond in the course of their day to make a person's experience a little easier. But to imply that care is something you "earn" by being "a good person" is just medical oppression in the service of white supremacy, and there's way too much of that already.

(17,152 posts)When it comes to human behavior and any job/career you will always be able to find exceptions to the rule. I'm not a medical professional but I have seen some pretty crappy nurses. I would say the vast majority of them are as you paint them. Hopefully the awful ones are weeded out quickly by administrative people.

(12,630 posts)Nursing, Physician assistants, Physical therapists, Audiologists, Architects, Accountants, Educators WOW! and Social workers. By limiting educators (teachers) this will avalanche into every profession. There is already too much ignorance in the general populace, well in my opinion we are doomed.
