Trump is asked whether he'd feel comfortable living in New York City "under a Mamdani administration."
"Yes, I would," Trump responds. "I really would, especially after the meeting. Absolutely."
The president says he agrees with Mamdani on a lot of things, even if they may have different views on some topics.
Trump then goes on to speak about US senator Bernie Sanders, also a democratic socialist, saying that he also agreed with him "on much more than people thought".

(9,929 posts)What's one policy he has enacted or bill he has signed into law that reflects the values of Sanders et al.?
When Trump says he agreed with them "much more than people thought," he's probably referring to their shared disdain for the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad Democratic Establishment (tm) and this is just more lip service to certain progressives to divide those on the left yet again like he was so successful in doing in 2016.

(75,217 posts)I didn't have that on my bingo card. Never pass up a chance to bash progressives, eh?

(9,929 posts)But I'm a progressive in the true sense of the word, meaning I want to see constant PROGRESS being made.
I don't believe this "Donald Trump will bring the revolution!" bullshit about how we must regress as a nation so that progress can be made, even though no one should at this point after nothing to show for the decades worth of hard fought progress lost with Trump and his Republicans in office.
Achievable progress is better than unattainable perfection.
Cirsium
(3,182 posts)Sure, let's argue over the definition of a word in lieu of a meaningful dialogue. "I'm a progressive!" "No, I am a progressive!" Next up "what progressive means to me" and "what the word really means."
Here is a clue: The word is not the thing. The description is not the described. If I call a boulder a marshmallow, that doesn't mean it won't hurt if it lands on my head.
OK, strike "progressive" and just replace it with "people with whom you disagree." Nothing changes. Are we good now?
If you truly want to "see constant PROGRESS being made" then you must be pretty fed up with party leadership and the moderate wing of the party, yes?
W_HAMILTON
(9,929 posts)...some of the disciples of a certain politician that apparently value """fighting""" for decades without ever achieving over actual progress being made, which has in turn depressed turnout on the left and led to preventable Republican victories that have rolled back hard-fought progressive accomplishments.
Party leadership is why I have healthcare. Those who let Republicans be elected over good Democrats is why it will cost a couple hundred dollars more per month next year.
Party leadership is why I had a path to pay back my student loans and a portion of them canceled. Those who let Republicans be elected over good Democrats in 2016 is why that all got overturned by the Supreme Court.
As I said, you hate progressives.

(11,381 posts)having observed how many working class voters were flocking to Bernie despite the MSM's near-blackout of coverage of Bernie's campaign. And I can believe that Trump resents "elites" and finds it easier to tune in to working class concerns than do a lot of the ivy-leaguers who've run the country over previous decades _ though I don't believe Trump cares about workers enough to forego any opportunity to further enrich and empower himself.

(13,656 posts)I'm not sure who tamed who here. If I had to guess, the friendliness really means that Mamdani is (as I expected) going to go "ight-lay on the ocialism-say." That bodes well for our chances in 2026.
It just didn't occur to me that this news item would lead to anyone bashing progressives. But I guess any excuse will do.
You are suggesting that Trump is consistent and Mamdani is not. Sure you want to go there? Also, you are suggesting that it would be a good idea for Democrats to abandon the very positions that got Mamdani elected. Are you sure you want to go there?

(13,656 posts)I do agree he is a major political talent. Generational? No. Obama and Trump are generational. Mamdani is a mayor. Let's see how that goes.

(8,611 posts)Its remarkable he defeated everyone for mayor of NYC. Now he tackles the messy biz of governing. Well see how that goes.
Personally though Ill have fun watching him figure it all out - a lot like AOC.
Perhaps hell be Governor or ride to a national cabinet position. Dems are lucky to have him on our side. We need good communicators

This was meant to sabotage Mamdani's reputation with his supporters.
I mean come on, people are doing everything in their power to prove that this guy is a pedophile and Mamdani goes to met with him?
Political novice mistake in my opinion. Now he will have a picture of himself next to a pedophile and rapist. Ugh.
Arazi
(8,611 posts)He pitched his policies and is walking away with his dignity intact.
Better than intact. Mamdani looks like he bested Traitor who has spent a lot of time and ink raging about him, telling the world hes going to destroy him.

(11,540 posts)But mango Mussolini is a purely transactional human being. A pure grifter.
He gives nothing, even praise, unless it benefits him more than the other person. Unless that person is giving him something he thinks is valuable.
My very first thought when I heard this story is "what did Mamdani do or promise to do, to get praised by the pedophile".
Arazi
(8,611 posts)And transactional.
Your interpretation is valid too.
Time will tell. Today however, it really came across as Mamdani whipped Traitor into a respectful detente.

That, however, is a long shot.
Personally, trump is so far on the ropes that if I were Mamdani I would not have wasted my time.

(59,427 posts)Both had trashed each other as the worst of political extremes, and came out of the meeting all smiles and chummy. Big front page headlines and smiling photo handshakes. I know, I know, even Molotov and Ribbentrop managed that, and yesterday isnt going to postpone World War Three. Even Richard Viguerie and I sit down on occasion, all cordial and smiles. He still thinks I am totally full of libbrul shit, and I still think he is the political Prince of Darkness.
What matters is what happens once Mamdani is office. What happens before then is more PR. Whoever spins it best gets the stuffed blue rabbit at the county fair, and it could just as easily be a tie.
Not that past history means in any way it will be repeated, but it has long been the case that the office of Mayor of New York City has been a political dead end. LaGuardia, Wagner, Koch, Giuliani, etc. If Mamdani is going to break that tradition, he had best get started early, and a photo op with Trump in the Oval Office will have a short shelf life.
