House votes 285-98 to denounce 'horrors' of socialism ahead of Mamdani-Trump meeting

https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2025/11/21/congress/house-denounces-horrors-of-socialism-00664412

The House voted 285-98 to approve a resolution condemning the “horrors of socialism” Friday morning, just hours before President Donald Trump is set to meet with New York’s incoming democratic socialist mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Eighty-six Democrats joined with Republicans to approve the measure. Two others voted present. No Republican voted to oppose it.

(snip)

The debate over the symbolic measure was derailed for about 10 minutes after Rep. Maria Salazar (R-Fla.) verbally attacked Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) on the floor, accusing her of being a “friend” of the late Cuban dictator Fidel Castro despite traveling to the country and seeing the abuses of his regime.

Waters asked for Salazar’s words to be taken down, but Salazer instead withdrew her remarks, allowing the debate to continue.

She scraped in by playing to the middle in a purple distrist and watching the pubs destroy a sure win by a "moderate" pun who had held the seat easily for 12 years. But, she had pissed off Trump by backing Romney and saying that Donnie was unfit to hold any office.

In the primary the MAGAs backed a Super MAGA pro-life, pro-gun, ass kisser. There enough moderat pubs to combine with the Dems for her to win as a "moderate". . I held my nose and voted for her. Since then she's cuddled up to Trump to protect her from the furious Dems.

Why in God's name would any Democratic Representative vote for this when they have to know it's pure propaganda to damn Mamdani's visit today. And no, I do not think Mamdani wants to turn NYC into Cuba.

CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

Denouncing the horrors of socialism.

Whereas socialist ideology necessitates a concentration of power that has, time and time again, collapsed into communist regimes, totalitarian rule, and brutal dictatorships;

Whereas socialism has repeatedly led to famine and mass murders, and the killing of over 100,000,000 people worldwide;

Whereas many of the greatest crimes in history were committed by socialist ideologues, including Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, Fidel Castro, Pol Pot, Kim Jong Il, Kim Jong Un, Daniel Ortega, Hugo Chavez, and Nicola´s Maduro;

Whereas tens of millions died in the Bolshevik Revolution, at least 10,000,000 people were sent to the gulags in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and millions more starved in the Terror-Famine (Holodomor) in Ukraine;

Whereas between 15,000,000 and 55,000,000 people starved to death in the wake of famine and devastation caused by the Great Leap Forward in China;

Whereas the socialist experiment in Cambodia led to the killing fields in which over a million people were gruesomely murdered;

Whereas up to 3,500,000 people have starved in North Korea, dividing a land of freedom from a land of destitution;

Whereas the Castro regime in Cuba expropriated the land of Cuban farmers and the businesses of Cuban entrepreneurs, stealing their possessions and their livelihoods, and exiling millions with nothing but the clothes on their backs;

Whereas the implementation of socialism in Venezuela has turned a once-prosperous country into a failed State with the highest rate of inflation in the world;

Whereas President Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence, wrote, ‘‘To take from one, because it is thought that his own industry and that of his fathers has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association, the guarantee to every one of a free exercise of his industry, and the fruits acquired by it’’;

Whereas President James Madison, the "Father of the Constitution’’, wrote that it ‘‘is not a just government, nor is property secure under it, where the property which a man has in his personal safety and personal liberty, is
violated by arbitrary seizures of one class of citizens for the service of the rest’’; and

Whereas the United States was founded on the belief in the sanctity of the individual, to which the collectivistic system of socialism in all of its forms is fundamentally and necessarily opposed:

Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring),

That Congress denounces socialism in all its forms, and opposes the implementation of socialist policies in the United States.

The horrors of Socialism as practiced in Maoism and Stalinism...okay, I'm fine with being against stupid One Party or Autocratic Central Governments.

Oh, I know.... Let's do a resolution denouncing End Stage Capitalism as practiced by Fascists, Mobsters and Oligarchies, next.
Then we can go on to the high level corruption and horrors inherent in Theocracies and both Left and Right Radicalism.

Or just maybe, after the morning prayer service, have a two hour basic US Civics and Government Class every Tuesday and Thursday, instead of manning the phone banks for donations.

Those contented populations tend to live in mixed economies that blend capitalism with socialism, but with less of the fear-mongering that characterizes American life. The U.S. has a mixed economy as well and at one time it led to the most prosperous middle class the nation has ever had and was improving standards of living incrementally. Now that the post-Reagan fever dream has finally reached its apex, we are poised to plunge even further below those happy Europeans than we already were.

Those countries do have mixed economies, but as you point out, that includes socialism. The very socialism that our House condemned this very day. If we accept that condemnation then we are saying some evil is okay. Of course, the "horrors" associated with socialism isn't socialism at all. It was and is despotism. And that's what those countries lack. That is why they are happy. Economically, they have something approaching decency while retaining democracy.

Democrats should have simply abstained from voting and told anyone curious that they thought the time ever more precious since the session had been affected so much by the shutdown. "I"m trying to give the American people actual work in exchange for their money," they could have said on the record.

In President Harry's Truman's remarks in Syracuse, New York on October 10, 1952, he said this:

Socialism is a scare word they have hurled at every advance the people have made in the last 20 years.

Socialism is what they called public power. Socialism is what they called social security.

Socialism is what they called farm price supports.

Socialism is what they called bank deposit insurance.

Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations.

Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people.

When the Republican candidate inscribes the slogan "Down With Socialism" on the banner of his "great crusade," that is really not what he means at all.

What he really means is "Down with Progress--down with Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal," and "down with Harry Truman's fair Deal." That's all he means.

You can listen to President Truman deliver this speech (and download it, if you want) on the Truman Library's website here: https://www.trumanlibrary.gov/soundrecording-records/sr59-160-president-truman-rear-platform-remarks-syracuse-new-york. The portion you're looking for is about 6:45 into the speech.

all forms government intervention are a form of socialism as we as a society have decided certain government ventures like capital projects such as roads, bridges, hospitals, along with police and fire protection are for the greater good in promoting civility and the general welfare as prescribed in the Constitution's preamble.

If true this is too discouraging to contemplate. I can’t take it when the Dems turn on their own supporters.

They are pretty different.

RATHER THAN Democrats using this to illustrate Republicans' ignorance on the matter, they accepted Republican framing and voted for a stupid bill.

Ugh.
