In a jaw-dropping escalation of authoritarian chest-thumping, U.S. Border Patrol chief Gregory Bovino appeared on Fox News promising retaliation because a federal judge ordered the release of 13 immigrants who were illegally detained during the Trump administration’s Chicago immigration dragnet.
Judge Jeffrey Cummings ruled that the arrests violated a legally binding consent decree requiring warrants — you know, basic constitutional rights — and demanded a review of up to 600 more cases that may also involve unlawful detentions.
But instead of respecting the rule of law, Bovino had a full-blown meltdown on national television.
His message? If the court frees 650 wrongfully detained people, he’ll punish Chicago by arresting 1,650 more.
