NM-GOV: Republican Steve Lanier Announces Campaign for New Mexico Governor

In a significant development for New Mexico’s political landscape, Republican state Senator Steve Lanier of Aztec has officially entered the race for governor. His announcement, made on Wednesday, sets the stage for a competitive Republican primary as he seeks to succeed Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, who is ineligible to run due to term limits.

Lanier, who has a background as a high school history teacher and track coach, emphasized his commitment to restoring trust in government and bolstering support for rural communities within the state. His candidacy is notable not only for his emphasis on education and community engagement but also for the political landscape that includes other prominent Republican candidates, such as Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull, who is also vying for the GOP nomination.

As New Mexico gears up for the 2026 gubernatorial election, the competition is heating up on both sides of the political aisle. The Democratic nominee race is equally intense, showcasing a trio of candidates: former Congresswoman and U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, Albuquerque District Attorney Sam Bregman, and former Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima.

Lanier’s legislative history includes his tenure on the San Juan County Commission and his recent election to a state Senate seat representing northwestern New Mexico. In the Senate, he has tackled issues such as voting rights and tax relief, although some of his proposals, like those pertaining to noncitizen voting, have not passed. Additionally, he showed bipartisan support by voting in favor of a Democratic-sponsored measure aimed at providing state funding for food assistance, demonstrating a willingness to collaborate across party lines amid ongoing negotiations at the federal level regarding a government shutdown.

NM hasn't elected a Republican Governor in over 25 years. On top of that, 2026 is shaping up to be a terrible year for Republicans.
