More than 8,000 US flights delayed as air traffic control absences persist

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -More than 8,000 flights were delayed across the U.S. on Sunday as air traffic controller absences continued to disrupt travel and a federal government shutdown reached its 26th day.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the Federal Aviation Administration experienced air traffic control staffing issues at 22 locations on Saturday, and added additional shortages were expected to lead to more flight delays and cancellations in the days ahead.

According to FlightAware, a flight-tracking website, there were more than 8,000 U.S. flight delays by 11 p.m. ET on Sunday (0400 GMT on Monday), an increase from about 5,300 on Saturday. Delays have often been above average since the government shutdown began on October 1.

Southwest Airlines had 45%, or 2,000 flights delayed on Sunday, while American Airlines had nearly 1,200, or a third of its flights delayed, according to FlightAware. United Airlines had 24%, or 739 flights, delayed and Delta Air Lines had 610 flights, or 17%, delayed.

1. Billionaire Boyz Club doesn't have a clue about how most people live, and rely on timely pay for the work they do

The Boyz are just used to stiffing contractors and deferring payments as it suits their needs. Totally untethered from reality for the majority of how people live.

Air traffic controllers and all the other professionals who make air travel safe are not doing that stressful work for fun or just to pass the time. Slavery has been outlawed here for quite some time. Pay federal workers! Get a fair budget passed!

I have a friend flying today. Worried? Oh yes indeed. And I don't want to see my friend stranded for weeks or months while the GOP tries to pressure DEMs into giving up. But I kinda hope my friend gets extra time with the family 'back home' due to air traffic controllers finally ALL staying home and stopping air travel until the GOP gets their shit together.

Time for the Billionaire Boyz to learn some hard truths.

Cut backs, ya know.

My brother was an ATC at LaGuardia! One of the BUSIEST airports in the world.

How does he enhance safety?
He has his wife fly out of another airport when he figures that Newark is less safe
but leaves it operating for the commonfolk.

4. My daughter had college appts

For her kids in WA & OR and she lives in San Antonio. They had to change appts as flight was canceled one day then late the next. Coming home for work today last night flight was late so home at 2am...

Lucky she made it there and back at all. Her husband changed airlines and flight to Eugene instead of Seattle so they couldn't fly together.

I am flying at Christmas and wondering how that will go...

5. Southwest had MORE flights delayed than American Airlines?

I thought that for THAT to happen, they would have had to have the wings of half their planes fall off, and they would have had to re-attach them with Elmer's glue. I thought NO airline had more flights delayed than American except maybe if Albanian Airlines had a really bad day.

Earlier this month I flew into Burbank when their controllers went awol. Next week I’m flying internationally and worry about getting back if the whole system collapses by then.
