https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1PMDwQTZgb/Jamaica will be unrecognizable later this week.
Extremely scary situation unfolding for the residents of Jamaica right now. Hurricane Melissa is undergoing super rapid intensification and is now a category four with 140 mph winds. We will likely be looking at a category five later today at this rate.
Catastrophic impacts are expected for the island nation and unfortunately many don't have the ability to evacuate. Prayers definitely needed now for our friends in Jamaica.

(12,095 posts)I just dont have faith in either. Protect yourself, your family and friends lives first. And I hope we can come together with full financial support to help rebuild if needed.
I am at ground zero Helena, and we now know what you guys face way too often there. Deadly wind and flooding, and helpless fear as it happens.
A whole lotta hearts here ready to do what we can.

(16,147 posts)"Jamaicas Ambassador to the United States, retired Major General Anthony Anderson, is coordinating disaster preparedness efforts among members of the diaspora as Hurricane Melissa threatens to impact the island for days.
Ambassador Anderson is expected to host a Zoom meeting this evening (tomorrow) to outline the coordinated relief response.
According to Oliver Mair, spokesman for the Jamaican Embassy in Washington, DC the countrys honorary consuls across the United States will participate in the meeting. They will outline ongoing preparations to support Jamaica should the hurricane make landfall.
Mair, who is also Jamaicas Consul General in Miami, said several discussions have already been held with members of the diaspora to establish a unified approach to relief coordination.
Representatives from the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management and other government agencies in Jamaica are also expected to brief participants on the situation at home.".... (more)

(7,337 posts)Jamaica would be spared by an inch. The best thing is for the center of movement to remain below 3mph westward. Slower would be nice for Malaise. 😻🙏

Jamaica, in particular, will likely suffer catastrophic impacts from now rapidly-intensifying (but slow-moving) Hurricane #Melissa. A *Category 5* landfall now appears to be the most likely outcome, & 30-40+ inches of *additional* rain in mountains will lead to extreme flooding.

(1,631 posts)Your DU friends are hanging on tight here with you, figuratively speaking. Youve experienced these terrible storms in the past, but maybe not one this explosive. Were hoping your past experience has prepared you for whats to come. Stay safe and let your past knowledge guide your decisions. Hugs and prayers to Malaise and all of Jamaica.

Serious wind and rain in some parts of the island but not much in my neck of the woods. That is expected to change tomorrow. Will be pretty bad across the island.
We survived Gilbert - with neither running water or power for weeks -well get through this.

Anyone who can get to the highground in the center of the island, should be OK. Also east of Kingston are the Blue Mountains, but that's also where a lot of the rain will fall. It could be as much as 40 inches of rain falling in certain areas.
