MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - The Tennessee Department of Transportation hosted a special event to officially unveil the new name for the I-55 Bridge over the Mississippi River: Kings Crossing.
The new name, adopted by the Tennessee General Assembly and the Arkansas Highway Commission, honors three transformative figures known as Kings: B.B. King; Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and Elvis Presley.
Several leaders, including Mayor Paul Young, Representatives Justin Pearson and Steve Cohen, and Senator Brent Taylor, attended the event.
Will Reed, TDOT Commissioner, spoke about the importance of the bridge: This piece of infrastructure is so critically important to the mid-south region and to the nation as a whole. It symbolizes a collective history, heritage, and the enduring spirit of the unity that defines this entire region.
