Illinois National Guard member says she would "definitely say no" to Chicago deployment

Staff Sergeant Demi Palecek of the Illinois National Guard, who is running for local office. She said she fears retribution, but added it's too important not to speak up.

An order to report for duty is not an illegal order. Failure to comply with such an order is both criminal disobedience and likely missing movement, both court-martial offenses under the state military code.

Before someone asks, contentious objector status is not available for a soldier who opposes a specific action - only religious or moral opposition to all military action.

I admire willingness to face imprisonment as a form of civil disobedience so long as there is an understanding of the potential consequences.
