DU is my only "social media."
I had twitter blocked years before Musk bought it. I block Facebook and Bluesky and all the rest.
I do regularly visit a few technical and scientific sites where political discussions are highly discouraged. I'm not entirely an internet recluse.
For me it's all about the Signal-to-Noise-Ratio.
I find most social media intolerably noisy. DU would be too noisy too if I couldn't buy a star to make all the advertising go away, hide political videos and memes, and ignore certain members here.
I quit all advertising supported "traditional" television in 2012 for similar reasons. It was just too damned full of noise, and worse, lies. It all just wears me down. I think that's the purpose of it -- to turn us into passive "consumers," too weary and too confused to effectively participate in politics.
