Those are the worst things I can eat, I need to stay under 20 grams of carbs a day.
So diabetics basically need to eat PROTEINS, and yeah, it's now ridiculous, I haven't had beef in 6 months, I can still find some pork and chicken reasonably, but fresh fish is almost at the point of disappearing from my shopping list too.
I'm 74 and STILL work 7 days a week because my SS check no longer even covers my rent in Los Angeles, so I have to have an income in order to keep my life savings intact for the inevitable day when I can no longer work.
I guess the silver lining is there are thousands and thousands of tons of soybeans that are probably going to be foisted off on us, with some MAGAt like Paula Deen hired by the regime to publish *Down Home Sho Nuff Good Eatin' Southern Style Soybeans" recipes for us all to enjoy.
And back to your post, I LOVE me some Cuban Lechon, Picadillo, Ropa Vieja, Yucca con Mojo...but they will soon cost what used to be the price at a gourmet restaurant for an impressive dinner, even if you make them at home.
So much WINNING.

(138 posts)Actually, there is a lot of fiber in cardboard. A little salsa and it would be edible.
Egg and breadcrumbs. Fry in the usual way.

(4,472 posts)and is sold canned now. I don't eat meat unless I'm invited for dinner and meat is on the menu. But the jackfruit seems like it is a good meat substitute to me.

(3,911 posts)I don't think its texture or taste is anything even close to meat. It's more like artichoke hearts in texture and I guess taste depend on what you put with it. But it's not particularly cheap either. My one complaint about vegan food--because I do love it--is that I have to eat more often because I get hungry faster after a vegan meal than a meat based meal. Still, I prefer vegan food most of the time.

(3,911 posts)and I have to admit, meat is already too expensive for me. Luckily I started cooking vegan food in earnest about a year ago. I've made some pretty respectable traditional foods with grains...tacos and spaghetti with a mixture of red quinoa and steel cut oats, of all things--just as an example. I'm surprised shrimp hasn't gone up as fast as most meat. But it is really hard to create plant based foods with the same "chew" as meat. I do miss that from time to time. Shrimp is not a bad substitute for that chewy texture, but it won't work in everything. I hope you are stocking up like crazy when you see a loss leader sale.

(111,865 posts)and savings. I do like to use a bit of ground beef or other meat, at least for flavoring bean dishes and stews, but the explosive increase in prices will have me eating less. I just don't think it is worth it, and fortunately, I have simple tastes in routine foods most of the time. That said, one can eat only so much poultry (also increasing), and fish is quite expensive.
It is insane what Trump and his tariffs are doing to the cost of everything. But with his level of ignorance, arrogance, rapidly developing dementia, and sadistic sociopathic personality, I can't be suprised.

(21,145 posts)Its been ticking up for the past six months.
I expect by this time next year, beef, other than hamburger, will be off the menu in many households.
Chicken is still pretty reasonable up here in BC, and beef, although increasing in price, isnt as bad as in the US yet.

(2,272 posts)Our local Safeway has implemented a deal that I think is genius in its simplicity. They offer four packages of chicken, beef, or pork in any combination for $20. Most are at least one pound, often over. The food is generally within one or two days of its expiration date. Ive gotten some incredible deals (e.g., one pound of round steak for $5, 4 pork chops for $5). Anything I dont immediately use I freeze for later. Its a win-win all around.
BTW, that meal looks absolutely delicious.

(1,044 posts)We have kept the supermarket cost far too low with subsidies as well. There's a lot of harm that goes into meat for the average American diet.

(3,544 posts)is TVP, textured vegetable (soy) protein, like Bob's:

It's a good source of protein and fiber and is gluten free as well. It is a dried tofu that absorbs the liquid and flavor it's cooked in and gives a texture very similar to cooked ground beef or turkey. I use it in red pasta sauce, chili, and vegetable soups, adding it for the last 30 minutes of cooking. It also thickens the dish.
