Huntington Beach No Kings Day, 2.0 10-18-2025 ( Batch 1, pictures below. Back with more pix later today)

Nationwide there were more than 2,000 peaceful rallies for No Kings Day 2.0. At the Huntington Beach No Kings Day, you didn't have to look hard to find the spirit of celebration embodied in a 10 foot inflatable t-Rex, an inflatable unicorn “galloping” through out the crowd, a skeleton frog (fitting in well so close to Halloween) or thousands of people with thousands of signs.

No Kings on the Beach was a cross between a state fair, the 4th of July, and a college graduation. People were celebrating their ability to express contempt for much of the politics today and were excited to see such a large and peaceful turnout. I estimate the crowd was about 40% larger than the previous protest. It went on for several more blocks, and this time many, many more people packed both sides of the street.

The signs expressed righteous anger at the government. They expressed displeasure with the anti-constitutional nature of ICE, (the Posse Comitatus Act says federal forces cannot be involved in law enforcement). The signs expressed concerns about the president's unilateral actions – murdering alleged drug dealers, in six different boats and a submarine in international water, without being charged, arrested, "trialed" or convicted. And the signs bound people together in solidarity. Many were concerned that the President is in fact, a 34 time convicted felon and that he has a group of sycophants in the White House who are willing to do his bidding, no matter what the law or the courts say.

There was no music, very little chanting, no speakers, hardly any pets, no violence, no parade, lots of cars honking in support, and this time a man with a bullhorn and a green safety vest walked up and down, addressing the crowd, handing out water, and explaining there was a medical tent near by and how to get medical attention.

There were still many, many older white people but there were significantly more younger families with children this time as well. When you’ve lost the old white people vote and the young family vote, you have already lost the war. I spoke with a four and an eight year old who seemed to understand that these are important times. The 8 year old articulated reasonable concerns about ICE. I attended my very first political rally when I was four or five years old and still have good memories.

There was no evidence of ICE, no National Guard, minimal police presence, and a very well-behaved crowd rounded out the afternoon. The loyal opposition seemed to consist of a gentleman (and I use the word to give him the benefit of the doubt) on a bicycle who circled the route a number of times carrying a pro-Trump flag, some very young white teenagers (looking too young to vote) in an SUV who seemed delighted when their yelling provoked startled reactions from the crowd. A convertible also came by with some young white men who demanded  to to know "Who paid you?", and then finally there was a gentleman carrying large Trump 2024 flag sitting on the sidewalk next to a building. That poor guy is in desperate need of a calendar.

There were plenty of American flags, lots of patriotism, lots of cheering, peace signs, strong support for Prop 50 and support for the Constitution. This same story played out again and again in thousands of cities through out the nation and involved millions of Americans. The New York Police Department reported more that 100,000 attended their peaceful event! Overall, the First Amendment had a very good day in the sun.
