The Department of Homeland Security has acquired two luxury jets at a cost of $172 million to be used by DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and other top agency officials, new documents reviewed by The New York Times revealed Saturday.
According to the documents, the two jets are used Gulfstream G700s, which its manufacturer touts as having the most spacious cabin in the industry." They seat up to 13 passengers, include a whisper-quiet cabin with 100% fresh, plasma-ionized air and the largest windows in business aviation.

In addition to raising serious questions about your ability to effectively lead an agency whose procurement strategies appear to vary on a whim, the procurement of new luxury jets for your use suggests that the [United States Coast Guard] has been directed to prioritize your own comfort above the U.S.C.G.s operational needs, even during a government shutdown, reads a letter sent to Noem and signed by Reps. Rosa DeLaura (D-CT) and Lauren Underwood (D-IL).

Indeed, from choosing to live rent-free in the Commandants quarters, to defending Mr. Lewandowskis refusal to provide basic information about his special government employee status, to your frequent appearances at ongoing operations which require a diversion of resources to focus on your security, it appears you are routinely prioritizing yourself and those closest to you over the needs of the USCG servicemembers who protect this nation, the letter reads.

(1,753 posts)Why does Ice Barbie need two planes? Was this competitively bid or another gift from Quatar?
Furloughed and fired employees; babies and seniors going hungry in Texas; cancer research halted; FEMA a no show in Alaska? This is despicable.
Sounds like waste, fraud, and abuse to me.

(3,107 posts)downfall. It WILL come. I do wonder if these people are all pardoned already. They seem to be acting like the blanket pardons are already written. Maybe some states need to be looking into their bullshit. TSF can't pardon state charges.

Theres one area within DHS, however, where money appears to be flowing quite freely. The New York Times reported:
The Department of Homeland Security has purchased two Gulfstream private jets for Kristi Noem, the secretary, and other top department officials at a cost of $172 million, according to documents reviewed by The New York Times. The jets, which a department official said were needed for safety, are the latest expenditures on behalf of Ms. Noem to draw scrutiny from Democrats and other critics who have noted her lavish spending on living and other expenses during her time in public life.
.....The Coast Guard originally requested $50 million to buy a jet to replace the plane Noem is already using. Now, however, DHS is spending $172 million to purchase two jets.....
ProPublica reported last month, for example, that a community in Florida awaiting FEMA assistance found itself stuck in bureaucratic purgatory, right up until one of Noems wealthy supporters reached out to her, at which point the process dramatically improved.
A month earlier, The Washington Post reported that the secretary was living for free in a military home typically reserved for the Coast Guards top admiral. Other Cabinet officials, including during both Trump administrations, have paid to use military housing that otherwise would be occupied by top generals and admirals, the article added.
As for her tenure as governor, the Times report noted that Noem also used taxpayer money to remodel the governors mansion (she bought, among other things, a sauna) before having South Dakota taxpayers cover the costs of her pre-election travel in 2024, including a six-day trip to Paris.
