Amazon's Ring to partner with Flock, a network of AI cameras used by ICE, feds, and police

Amazon’s surveillance camera maker Ring announced a partnership on Thursday with Flock, a maker of AI-powered surveillance cameras that share footage with law enforcement.

Now agencies that use Flock can request that Ring doorbell users share footage to help with “evidence collection and investigative work.”

Flock cameras work by scanning the license plates and other identifying information about cars they see. Flock’s government and police customers can also make natural language searches of their video footage to find people who match specific descriptions. However, AI-powered technology used by law enforcement has been proven to exacerbate racial biases.

If you're still using Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, etc, ... WHY?

For Facebook, the only alternatives I know of are my space (yes, it still exists) and several very private invitation only groups for families. For Amazon, there are some businesses with their own websites, but a lot of them now go through Amazon, and other large chains (target, walmart, temu, shein) have their own issues. If you live in a rural area where the nearest store larger than your local convenience store is an hour or more drive away, Amazon may be the only one other than the post office that will deliver things to you.

How'd that work out with the banks?

Oh well, I guess we'll accept fascism, as long as my Sidney Sweeny Bath Water Soap ships on time.

This just makes me fucking weep for my country.

My mom used to tell stories about Sheet Metal Drives and Sweet and Meat Chits. I think her family got one per month.

Whatever, she never had to face the horror of not getting her socks shipped free, as long as she spent $35 and had a Prime Account.

I can't imagine how miserable life must have been, before we starting making minimum wage employees pee in plastic bottles to keep 'MuriKKKa industry humming along.

Maybe those unable to sacrifice ANYTHING, will wake up when they learn they've SACRIFICED EVERYTHING.

I simply answered the why the poster asked.
I sometimes think some in the democratic party won't be happy until we are all back to living in caves and gathering our food.

But then I realized that just isn't true. Most retailers, even those who also go through Amazon, have a site you can order from and they'll ship to you via USPS. And they're getting better about customer service and shipping for free, etc. Sadly, it is true that brick and mortar stores are hard to find, but a lot of retailers are changing that too.

The only thing I have noticed is that shipping times are a few days longer. For many sites the costs are higher, but I've been able to shop around and find most things for costs close to or sometimes even less than I find on Amazon. I'm using a lot of ebay and etsy too.

Yes. It's no longer a couple of clicks and the product is on its way to me in two days. But I find that's had a lot of advantages I hadn't anticipated. I'm spending less on impulse buys and I'm finding higher quality items (bc lets face it, Amazon defaults to very cheap and badly made products). I'm certainly not living in a cave and gathering my food.

And look at that article again. Amazon is working with ICE. That's despicable.
