Most Americans say taxing the rich is best way to reduce federal debt: Gallup

Raising income taxes for wealthy Americans is the most popular way of reducing the federal debt, according to the latest Gallup poll

The survey, conducted in September, asks Americans whether they support a range of methods aimed at reducing the federal debt, which has ballooned in recent years to more than $37 trillion

Only two proposals receive a majority support of U.S. adults: 63 percent back “increasing income tax rates for upper-income Americans,” and 54 percent support “increasing tax revenues by making major changes to the current federal tax code.

Among those who favor increasing taxes on the rich are 86 percent of Democrats, 62 percent of independents and 38 percent of Republicans.

They don't want to share.

2. That should be a prominent plank in the Democratic party platform.

Corporate media keeps telling us that "raising taxes" is the third rail of electoral politics. Let's put that myth to rest.

But due to the many nefarious forces who do not want Democrats in power -- mostly on the right, yes, but even some on the left -- they propagandize it in such a way that those on the right think we want to tax everyone and some of those on the left think we are too corporatist blah, blah, blah, and would never follow through on it or it doesn't go far enough for them.

6. Well, NOT taxing them is a big part of how we got into this deficit mess to begin with...

So taxing them needs to be a part of how we fix it.

Wealthy people fear democracy because they fear that their wealth will be taken away by the majority. The Constitution has strong protections for that wealthy minority. Those protections are often exploited in ways that hurt the lower income classes.

Oh, and we need to tax wealth as well as income. It is far too easy for wealthy people to manipulate their incomes to reduce their tax burden.

Diddling Donny is quite fond of undemocratic oligarchies. Of course he doesn't want to tax the rich. He's one of the rich.

but in this case, I think if you want to get rid of the federal debt, the first thing to do is get rid of the orange obscenity who is spending OUR money on satisfying his own desires. Now another $20 BILLION for Argentina and he won't even tell us how many billions are going to his own personal gestapo, aka ICE. And the latest is he wants to start a land war against Venezuela. NONE of this is going through congress.

13. I think that wealth of greater than maybe 50 million should be taxed like property with property taxes.

As long as your wealth is over that amount, you are taxed. Not income based as that can always be cheated and does nothing about the hoarding of money.

If some executive is only paid $1 a month but has 100 million in stock that their company gave them, they can borrow at almost 0 interest rate have have great wealth. All those shares should be classed as property and taxed. Every single year.
