(6,163 posts)I made it through almost 3 minutes and than gave up. Yes, Florida is having a major real estate crisis, but it has more too do with insurance rates being way to high for most people to afford. This is NOT Florida's busiest time. Next winter and spring are prime tourist time in Florida. Please, if we are going to have a crisis report at least stick with the basic facts. I don't know what else this said because I simply couldn't stand the video. Yes, Florida tourist season is going to be way down, but lets not get ahead of ourselves. January through April is prime tourist season. That's a few months away.

(12,960 posts)or condos and have sold and others leased condos for the season. Do you know whose tourism was up by 30% this year? Canada's. Provided a lot of jobs too. Many European countries also saw an increase or stable tourism over the past year. I have several friends who spent the winters in Arizona and they are choosing Mexico or other warm destinations but will not be coming back to the US.
Take a look at tourism in Las Vegas, Arizona and Florida also California and you will find tourism is down, it is just that Florida is just so fucking arrogant about it, so gets more attention.

(6,163 posts)What I didnt agree with was the wrong information in the video. I hate these sensational grab your attention with whatever nonsense we can spout. Give me the truth or at least something close to the truth. Otherwise were only slightly better than the republicans.

(20,133 posts)With the reality of climate change throwing hurricanes and rising seas at the state, there is no plausible way forward that doesn't see insurance premiums price most of the state's residents out of their homes over the nest 25 years.
Floridians will become climate refugees fleeing north.

I watched the entire video and it's backed up with research. The question is whether politicians should be allowed to call the prime tourist trade names (the main one in question is "parasites " ) because it creates ill will. Videos of low and no traffic on the boardwalks then further intensify the message that there's something wrong with FL.
The video illustrates that it's small business and wage earners who pay for it in lost customers and hours.
Lots of Canadians coming our way

(12,802 posts)Homes use to sell within a few months, a few homes I see on my dog walk have been up for sell for almost a year, I live in neighborhood of best elementary school in town so homes normally go faster. One of the homes is near me at the smaller middle class homes and other upper mid class home with pool. Both are in great shape and if times were ok should have sold.
I think Florida is getting hit with higher mortgage rates, very high or no insurance allowed so cash sale with no insurance? A lot of people out of work, all goods and services cost more including gas and electricity and groceries. Then healthcare, with the cost going up so high no one can afford a new mortgage.
Canadians have sold their winter homes there and people are mad at Disney.

(114,045 posts)Having said that, I think a lot of what's driving the bust are the stupid tariffs. The Canadian dollar has a ridiculously low exchange rate right now, meaning Canadians are getting very poor value for their money. They might find Florida familiar without much of a language barrier, but King Pond Scum has made destinations elsewhere look much more attractive.
Tucson, Phoenix, and Las Vegas were big destinations for winter retirees out here, I wonder how they will do this year.
This is all going to get worse before it gets any better because the King must go, taking his tariffs and hate with him, and that will take time.
So if you've ever harbored dreams of retirement in a pit like Florida, wait a couple of years, real estate prices should be firmly down the pan by then and you can pick up a place for a song. The boom cycle will come again, you can sell for an obscene profit and then retire someplace nicer.

(1,142 posts)a thing in the past. Many major cities are already experiencing flooding from rising tides. Gee, it don't take a brain surgeon to fuigure out whats coming. I say, sell now and get what you can, while you can.
Rentals in Ft Myers beach are 1/4 of that the normally are. They still haven recovered from the last 2 hurricanes.
The writing is on the wall. GET OUT.
I knew this decades ago. Florida is a nice place to VISIT!!!

(54 posts)To me this is not a bad thing. Florida is very close to having major water supply issues. 20+ million population plus several million tourists a year is just not sustainable.
The water supply comes mostly from underground aquifers. That supply is is quickly being depleted because of all the growth. In the 1960s (before Disney) if you dug a one foot hole in the ground it would fill with water. Nowadays in many places you have to go hundreds of feet down to get water.
Peninsular Florida basically has a four month wet season and an eight month dry season.
If people don't come here or move away it is not a bad thing for the environment and sustainability.
I know, it is selfish to say that but that is the reality.
