Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe meme going around social media is that the current Gaza peace deal, is the
same one that Biden brokered.
The timeline is that Neti went to mar-o-lago before the election and cut a deal with Trump to wait until after the election to accept the deal, so it would obviously impact Biden negatively.
If you remember, Trump said he would end the war on day one.
But, it didn't happen probably because Neti wanted to annihilate the Palestinians. I believe the casualty numbers were 67,000.
I think Neti conceded now because European countries were coming forward and recognizing Palestine as a state and world approval of him was tanking.
And Trump was there for photo finish, not just to get credit, but also because Kushner is brokering deals.
Not sure how much of this is factual, but I am trying to imagine what Trump thinks he's going to get away with after his term, because I don't think either Trump or Neti has a future as free men after they step down.

(28,479 posts)The meme version pretends that Israel was the only thing holding up peace and a meeting at MAL paused that
but few in the center are going to buy that Biden should get credit almost a year after the election. Particularly when the crux of the deal is a bunch of Arab countries saying its Trumps peace plan.

(33,610 posts)since fascists are now brokering the
so-called "deal."
This was also the case with the USA
and Trump, and between free western
nations and Hitler.

the streets of Miami should have been flooded with
persistent protesters.
Instead all we got, a few days later, was a tepid march

(104,989 posts)Trump was pissed off that Israel attacked Qatar, targeting the Hamas negotiating team, when that was the place that had "given" him a plane (albeit one the US would have to spend money on. The important thing is he gets to play with it after his term). So he told Netanyahu his time to kill Gazan civilians was up.

i was going to doubt this one bit the hostages have been released.

(3,614 posts)In the absence of a credible leak form the Biden camp, I'm not buying-in to the swirl on this.
This "deal" was sudden and offered no details of the negotiations that led up to it or that Trump had anything to do with the negotiations. My guess (totally uninformed) is that Trump found some advantage to himself if that conflict could come to an end and threatened Bibi with a weapons cut-off if he didn't make a deal.
I'm happy that the surviving hostages are now free and the bombing is paused, but I was disappointed to see Hamas immediately taking on police duties in Gaza. My understanding is that the last national/major election there was 2006, and Hamas won the most votes, but not a majority. Further, Hamas hasn't allowed an election to be held ever since.
My sense from reading many articles on this over the last year or so is that Hamas is less popular today than they were in 2006 and that, perhaps, a less militant party could get more votes than Hamas if elections were held today.
In any case, Hamas has to go. A non-militaristic party has to run things and the world community needs to recognize and materially support that new party.

Agree with your other comments though I would add I'm also happy that 1,700 Palestinians from Gaza - including about 300 women and children - were also freed yesterday from Israeli prisons where close to 100 have died due to systematic torture, starvation and denial of medical treatment.

(9,106 posts)The scenario the OP describes is certainly consistent with the character of Trump and Neti and consistent with the history of the Republican Party. I expect that the Biden administration set up the framework. There are probably small variations in detail that could be used to support the claim that it's a new plan. I also think that Biden, Blinken, and their team want to see something work and will refrain from claiming whatever credit is their due.
I am skeptical that Trump will ever be brought to justice. I would not object to simple, nasty karma as a substitute.
