At a time when Trump is gutting medical research and public health resources, what could possibly go wrong?

"Hospitals across the world have recorded an alarming rise in common infections that are resistant to antibiotics, with doctors saying the number of deaths driven by drug resistance will increase sharply in the years ahead.
One in six laboratory-confirmed bacterial infections were resistant to antibiotic treatments in 2023, with more than 40% of antibiotics losing potency against common blood, gut, urinary tract and sexually-transmitted infections between 2018 and 2023, records show.

These findings are deeply concerning, said Dr Yvan Hutin, the director of the WHOs department of antimicrobial resistance. As antibiotic resistance continues to rise, we are running out of treatment options and we are putting lives at risk, especially in countries where infection prevention and control is weak and access to diagnostics and effective medicine is already limited.

(18,690 posts)What caught my eye is that antibiotics are "losing potency against common" illnesses So we're not talking about MRSA or C. Difficile or one of the illnesses well-known to be difficult to treat with available antibiotics. Apparently we're talking about things like urinary tract infections, etc... We are losing ground in so many areas of basic existence.
I dont care what anyone thinks or how they look at me. I will continue to mask up anywhere.

Unfortunately, we will likely have a cure for bone spurs before we solve the anti-biotic issue...

I have to admit that when I read the notice it seemed a little draconian. But, now knowing whats in the background it makes perfect sense.
