'Have to be prepared for anything': Norway braces for Trumps reaction to a Nobel snub - AlternetThe Norwegian Nobel Committee said they reached their peace prize decision on Thursday, and "observers believe it is highly unlikely that Trump will be awarded the prize, leading to fears in the country over how he will react to being overlooked so publicly," the Guardian says.
Donald Trump is taking the US in an extreme direction, attacking freedom of speech, having masked secret police kidnapping people in broad daylight and cracking down on institutions and the courts. When [Trump] is this volatile and authoritarian, of course we have to be prepared for anything, Bergstø told the Guardian.
Trump has relentlessly campaigned for the prize, insisting last year, "If I were named... Obama, I would have had the Nobel prize given to me in 10 seconds."

(127,684 posts)he wouldn't be eligible for the 2025 prize because nominations closed on January 31, less than two weeks after he took office. That said, the Norwegians are well aware that Trump thinks he ought to have it anyhow, and that he's likely to throw a hissy fit and possibly retaliate when he doesn't get it even though the government has nothing to do with the award. They are aware that he's a vindictive dick who thinks he's entitled to it, quoting John Bolton, who said Trump thinks the world is divided into winners and losers; Trump considers himself a winner and therefore he should get the Peace Prize. It also bothers him a lot that Obama got it even after having been president for only a short time. And they know they will have to deal with the Trump/Nobel problem every year for as long as Trump is president. https://www.nrk.no/urix/kan-usa-straffe-noreg-om-trump-ikkje-far-fredsprisen_-1.17574346
We should see the announcement pretty early tomorrow, since Oslo is 6 hours ahead of US EDT.
