(811 posts)ALL that I read were a cut and paste formula boilerplate statement (copied from where? Some RW rag probably) endorsing passports or citizenship proof. "because illegals are voting all over the place."

(11,941 posts)We can't let voter suppression advocates be the only voices they hear (or...see).

(1,526 posts)This is not to say that this is spurious activity and should be avoided but some things are "odd"
There were three things that were unusual in all the comments and the times of comments listed.
The last listed comments were from Sept 30. There are no more recent comments. I went to the Page that listed all the current "Regulations Available" page and checked if there had been any more comments for other regulations in the time Frame of Oct 1 to 9 and found 68 listed. Seems strange with that there were none for This Regulation.
I randomly checked about 50 comments for this regulation from Sept 30 to Sept 3 (there are none before this with this being posted Aug 21). I found only one that was not in full support of this regulation and that one was only splitting hairs over what doc should be required.
The early comments appeared to be more personal and usually short but then later in the month the "copy and paste" pro mantras stared appearing ( really the only ones). The total responses claims were over 15K in number. I obviously did not look at them all.
I submitted a comment under "anonymous" and will see if it gets posted.

(149,934 posts)the harder it will be for right wingers to vote, too. This is one time when education is going to matter. I have documents to prove my citizenship, and have had them pretty much all my life. On the other hand, I know some hard-core Republicans who have nothing like that. I listened to one of them complain that they couldn't get a Real ID, after trying for months. This person did not even know the name of the town he had been born in. It's difficult to get a birth certificate if you don't know where you were born. Almost impossible, really. Someone knew it, of course, but that person is no longer alive.
All of this is going to hit people in much the same way. Get your documents together, if you haven't already done so. Help others to get theirs, too.

(7,676 posts)The Election Assistance Commission (EAC) does not have the authority to require proof of citizenship for voting. In fact, it is expressly prohibited from adding such requirements to the federal voter registration form by existing federal law, specifically the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA).

(11,941 posts)whom I trust for such info.
Unfortunately, something being illegal or things that Trump's admin "has no power" to do, isn't stopping them from doing it anyway.
The only thing that does work is massive public resistance.

(20,975 posts)There arent enough cops and troops to enforce any illegal law across the entire nation.
Trump is not omnipotent, and the states and the people are not powerless.

(11,941 posts)He thinks HE runs the elections.
Anyway, I guess Brennan Center is just fearmongering, and people should shrug and say: "Oh, they can't do that!" ?
We are well aware that "they can't do that" no longer applies.

(20,975 posts)And while he does have a lot of power, he has very little control.
Yes, there will be much interference and chicanery, however
As I said before:
Trump is not omnipotent, and the states and the people are not powerless

(11,941 posts)... "illegals voting" if it doesn't matter?
My God, no wonder the US is now a fascist dictatorship. Too many people shrug and say, "They can't do that!" or "Well, what difference does it make?" and then return to their daily routines.
In case you are not aware, the government does allow public comments on rule changes. And they can make a difference. Will they this time?
Maybe. Maybe not. But if everyone shrugs and says, "they can't do that!" and "it won't matter!", then there is ZERO chance of it and 100% chance that Trump and his goons will try to enforce their new rules.
If ya don't want to leave a comment, don't. But discouraging others because you don't want to be bothered is counterproductive.

(91 posts)Is the Supreme Court oral arguments next Wednesday morning that could decide part of the voting rights act.

(11,941 posts)It's a given what the Usurping Crap Fascist Court will do, unfortunatelynothing we can do yet about that.
But we can submit public comments on the passport requirement.
