The 17-year-old friends in a small New Jersey town were killed on their way to get ice cream. Prosecutors said the crash was intentional.
The two 17-year-old girls were riding their e-bikes down a quiet street in a small town on Monday, in the slanting light of a summery fall evening. The girls, Maria Niotis and Isabella Salas, close friends, were with Maria’s family, and they were going to get ice cream.

A few minutes later, he started to explain: “In a neighboring town, unfortunately, two girls were killed in a hit-and-run crash,” he said. “There has been a lot of misinformation going on over the internet. But I will say this: I wish my sincerest condolences to those girls, lost in that tragic accident.” He then said that he was “not authorized to talk about the whole thing,” and moved on.

Vincent P. Battiloro, the 17-year-old charged in the deaths of two teenage girls, was initially released by police before being formally charged and arrested two days later, officials with the Union County Prosecutor’s Office said Friday.
Battiloro of Garwood was initially detained by police on Monday after a fatal crash, but was released “pending further investigation,” according to officials. He was then arrested on Wednesday morning and charged with two counts of murder.
In the period between his release on Monday
Battiloro was charged Wednesday with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Maria Niotis and Isabella Salas, both 17-year-olds from Cranford.
In one of the 15 traffic tickets issued to Battiloro, police note that he was traveling 70 mph when he hit the girls with an SUV while they rode an e-bike.
In the weeks leading up to his arrest, Vincent Battiloro’s livestreams included claims he was the subject of “false allegations” involving “child porn,” and that a girl from school was causing him legal trouble. During a Sept. 23 livestream he said he wanted “vengeance.”
