J Street "deeply disturbed" by Kash Patel severing ties with ADL

"We are deeply concerned by FBI Director Kash Patels decision to sever ties with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). His description of the organization as functioning like a terrorist organization is particularly dangerous and reckless.
While we have had our differences with the ADL over the years, the organization has played a central role in combating antisemitism and extremism in the United States for more than a century. Ending the FBIs long-term partnership with the ADL, while smearing the organization in this manner, will only embolden extremists and make American Jews less safe.
The Trump Administration is engaged in a broad-based assault on liberal democracy and civil society, including demonizing and targeting NGOs and activists it sees as opponents. One nefarious part of its campaign has been weaponizing genuine fears over growing antisemitism and political violence to suppress and punish dissenting speech. Targeting the ADL in this manner makes clear that no one is immune, even those who have made efforts to be accommodating.
In this environment, organizations fighting for civil rights and democracy must stand together in defense of our principles and resist pressures that would further erode our democratic norms. We urge the Trump Administration to resume cooperation with the ADL on training and information-sharing.
