https://health.clevelandclinic.org/what-to-know-about-main-character-syndrome

“Main character syndrome” isn’t a medical diagnosis, but it’s a term that’s quickly piqued curiosity online and social media over the last few years. Main character syndrome is defined by a series of behaviors in which you see yourself as the main character in the story of your life. You are the protagonist and everyone else is often a sidekick or a villain. You often see yourself as the most important person in the room, and you act according to the narrative of your plot — however you define it.

They are born into public service, they die in public service. They know it. We know it. They stay out of politics (for the most part, though we know they do have their pet issues like the environment and such). It's a soft power they have. Prime ministers come and go and parties switch places. But the one constant is the Royal Family.

I would not want to see the UK become a Republic. Though Parliament has the power to do this at any time it wants.

It's a system that works. Mostly. As Americans used to say "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

As in any family, they are not all equally good or equally talented. But they are brought up to do their best, and to work for the nation. Those pet issues that they work on help Parliament in getting things done, thus saving the state money. When Charles was the Prince Royal, one of his pet issues was conserving historical buildings. An Antiques Roadshow UK spinoff had him on as a guest and got him to speak about this. It's not surprising they really appreciated his work. And whatever he may be like in private, he had enough manners to not appear arrogant. Imagine that.

We have our own problems, and they are much bigger (and much more orange) than Britain's antiquated royal ceremonies, which they mostly seem to enjoy. They have a constitutional monarchy (like many other European countries, including "socialist" Scandinavia) which gives the monarch very little actual power. He's their symbol, a kind of mascot. We, on the other hand, somehow managed to elect a malevolent doofus who thinks he's a king and strives for the kind of power Charles doesn't have, and that his predecessors haven't had for centuries (the first Charles was executed by Parliament for treason).

We have a war criminal actively participating to maintain genocides in Gaza and Ukraine. We have a traitor who has stolen classified information and most likely sold it to our enemies. We have a sex trafficker, especially concentrating on procuring young girls for rich and powerful people. We have a dictator commanding "his" army to take up arms against the people. We have a dictator illegally shutting down programs properly appropriated by Congress.

And some people are concerned about walking in front of an otherwise irrelevant person of "royalty" according to some ridiculous medieval customs that should have ended a millennium ago?

demonstrated lofty egalitarian principles, nevertheless, there are standards of behaviour that heads of state, their representatives, etc., observe when they are GUESTS in another country. We even have a Chief of Protocol office in the White House, the function of which is to try to ensure that our representaives do not insult the host country and its people, or make blooming arses out of themselves. Their job is to see that our representatives do not reinforce the view that others have of the "ugly american", a type that I saw far too often.

For you to find his boorish, crass, rude, egotistical behaviour acceptable, to defend it, is disappointing, to say the least. His disgusting behaviour is NOT something insignificant, it is part of his whole sick, twisted, destructive, hate-filled mindset.

Given your defense of boorish crassness in visitors, I would be curious to know how you behave when you visit other countries.

Nobody's thinking of this as the most egrigious fuck-up The Felon will make today, this week or this month. We're simply rolling our eyes once again at his ignorance or utter lack of concern for the societal rules we all know and, for the most part, follow.

I have no doubt it was intentional. He is, more than anything else, a full-time bully. He has never given a shit about laws, protocols, customs, politeness or any of that. He sees all of that as signs of weakness. The word grace means nothing to him.

As I see it, fixating on this only helps him, because he WANTS people to take note of the fact that he can bully people like this.

US President Donald Trump has left members of the British public livid after committing a "cringe-worthy" mistake during his meeting with the Royal Family

https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/uk-news/donald-trump-blasted-disrespecting-king-32494754

Donald Trump has sparked fury by walking in front of King Charles. When the US President met the Royal Family and Windsor Castle, he was slammed for the discourteous act.

Viewers flocked to X to slam the faux pas, with one asking: "Trump walking in front of the King. Is that normal?" A second said: "I see Trump is walking in front of the King. Very cringe." Meanwhile, a third added: "Trump is walking in front of the King. Power move biggly."

As this commenter pointed out, it isn't the first time President Trump has been accused of disrespecting the British monarchy. During his last UK visit, he angered the public by stepping in front of the late Queen and blocking her from cameras.

At the time, one individual commented: "This is just a great depiction of who Donald Trump is. He cares only for himself." Meanwhile, others branded the US leader as "rude and vulgar".

Wed Sep 17, 2025, 02:22 PM

trump is being laughed at by the King's staff

https://www.rawstory.com/king-charles-trump/

President Donald Trump flew his own bed linen from the U.S. for his stay in a royal English castle — and courtiers in the ultra-luxurious accommodation think they know why.

Courtiers at Windsor Castle — a home to Great Britain's King Charles — are reportedly joking that Trump wants to avoid leaving stains on the royal bedding from tanning chemicals.

The courtier's theory was shared with the Daily Mail in a report Tuesday as Trump started his first full day of the United Kingdom visit.....

"The president's aides, inspecting his suite in Windsor Castle before his arrival, provided housekeepers with bedding. A courtier muses that it may just be the President not wanting to stain the royal pillows with whatever tanning chemicals he uses to keep his orange hue.

"Below-stairs wags, noting that Melania has a separate suite, joke that if she'd asked for a water bed she could effortlessly drift apart from Donald."

191. Britain's Nate White 2019: Still the best description of Trump ever penned.
Thu Sep 18, 2025, 03:26 AM
Sep 18
https://thehobbledehoy.com/2019/03/08/british-writer-pens-the-best-description-of-trump-ive-read/

Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem.

For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace – all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed.

So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.

Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever.

I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility – for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman.

But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is – his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.

Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers.

And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults – he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.

There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface.

Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront.

Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul.

And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist.

Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that.
He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat.

He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.

And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully.
That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead.

There are unspoken rules to this stuff – the Queensberry rules of basic decency – and he breaks them all. He punches downwards – which a gentleman should, would, could never do – and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless – and he kicks them when they are down.

So the fact that a significant minority – perhaps a third – of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:
• Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.
• You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.

This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss.

After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum.

God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid.

He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart.

In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump.

And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish:

‘My God… what… have… I… created?

If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.
