On Sunday, June 29, 2025, Wess Val Roley, 20, ignited a small forest fire on Canfield Mountain, a moderate-size hill to the east of Coeur d'Alene, ID. He did this with the intent of drawing firefighters and other first responders to the area so he could kill them. He succeeded in killing Coeur d'Alene Fire Department Battalion Chief John Morrison and Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Frank Harwood, and severely wounded Cd'A Fire Department Engineer David Tysdal.
The Coeur d'Alene Press, where I'm a production supervisor, normally doesn't run Monday papers. Our publisher decided we would. For a couple hours we got promoted to The Most Important Paper in the World - our Acting Managing Editor Bill Buley was taking calls from newspapers worldwide seeking information.
Editor & Publisher Magazine, an important trade magazine for the print journalism industry, wrote up our efforts that night.

(7,009 posts)The review was outstanding. I'm glad to see that the community still matters to the industry. That's what a local paper should be about.
Our city paper has gone to mostly paid advertising articles and AP. I'm not even sure we have any local reporters left. They fired all the ones I liked.

(52,543 posts)two sports reporters and two columnists. One of our reporters does nothing but crime stories and court reporting if red states are so damned peaceful and law abiding why do I have someone working 40;hours a week writing about crime?
