Update About Federal Funding Cuts
Dear Friend of WQLN:
For nearly 60 years, WQLN has been a vital local nonprofit, a partner in public safety, and an educational resource for our community. Unfortunately, we are now facing a period of great uncertainty for our local station.
Early this morning, Congress passed H.R. 4, the Rescissions Act of 2025, voting to claw back federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) that was previously approved for fiscal years 2026 and 2027, thereby eliminating essential funding that WQLN and hundreds of other local public media stations across the country depend on for operations.
While we deeply appreciate the thousands of loyal WQLN members and financial supporters, this funding accounts for 40% of our annual budget. It is irreplaceable and presents serious challenges for stations like ours. Losing this CPB support means we will have to make some very tough decisions in the coming months that will affect the level of service we can provide.
Although this 40% funding cut will necessitate some difficult choices, please be assured that we are exploring all options to maintain our operations and continue serving you the members, viewers, listeners, supporters, students, and teachers who rely on WQLN. Our team is working diligently to find creative solutions that enable many of our services to continue reaching those who need them most, including quality programming, public safety, community connections, and educational outreach.
There are not enough words to express our gratitude to you. Please know how much the WQLN team values your unwavering support during this difficult time. You stepped up, contacting your representatives to ask them to preserve this funding which has received bipartisan support since 1967 but ultimately our collective efforts fell short by just a few votes.
This outcome is painful, but your steadfast support of our mission is real and that means everything to us. Moving forward, your dedication to WQLN will be key to our survival, stability, and success."
The kleptocrats are doing backflips.
A major blow against freedom of the press.

(5,194 posts)journalism. Sorry to see their demise, but I stopped listening years ago. Still, I concede, their voice is necessary for a healthy democracy. And we know that in America today, democracy is on a life-line.

(2,977 posts)It's the kids shows, masterpiece theater, Frontline. My kids were raised on Sesame Street, The Electric Company, and Mr. Rogers. My kids knew all their letters, numbers, and colors before kindergarten.

(16,640 posts)I've been a PBS Passport subscriber for years and before that, just an avid PBS watcher. They have such wonderful programming - everything from travel to Masterpiece Theater, American Experience, Frontline, etc.
I will be upping my monthly amount also, but we really need to take back the House bigtime so we can reverse some of this damage.

(249 posts)If we win back the house OR the senate - we can stop new stuff from happening
To roll some of this back - we need a veto-proof majority 2/3 of both.
That is assuming that the current POS will listen to anyone anymore

(19,670 posts)Hopefully they won't have to cut programming, but I don't see any way they won't be forced to.
After all, would we like to see PBS broadcasting, or have billionaires receive permanent tax cuts? 🤔
For me, the answer is pretty clear. BILLIONAIRES TAX CUTS, OF COURSE!

(1,034 posts)Now going on 15 days without PBS, Kids Create, FNX, and World
It is more than just a 'technical difficulty'
I appreciate those who stood to correct me that PBS, NBC, FOX and CBS
don't broadcast, their affiliates do, if their affiliates don't have the funding
to run their transmitters these over-the-air (free-TV) channels disappear
Now Coibert is cancelled, who will be next? Kimmel? Fallon?
We will soon be left with nothing but FOXNEWS and Sinclair!
