So I filed taxes for 3 years ago on time. Just got a letter about that return from the IRS that I had a big overpayment but they never got my return and to send it. Then got letter I owed a lot for the same year with penalties and interest. The return I actually filed showed all taxes paid and I had an overpayment. I called the number for help and they just said due to high call volume call back tomorrow. I called the next day and they said the same thing. The IRS is a mess! How do you get any answers when they're telling you 2 completely different things about the same tax return with multiple numbers pulled out of God knows where and threatening you. They give you no way to resolve the problems caused by THEM! DISASTER!

(9,344 posts)And due to Republican attacks and cuts through the years, a lot of IRS notices are automated now, which means they can send out a ton at once if something is mismatched on your tax return from what they have in their records, but good luck trying to get it resolved! If you write a response back, it took several months for them to make their decision -- back before these reckless MAGA cuts! If you try to call pretty much at any time other than when they first open up, you'll often be waiting 60+ minutes and sometimes you just get a message saying that they are so busy, you need to try your call again at a later time.
