During a meeting with the leaders of several African nations at the White House, President Donald Trump took a pause Wednesday to compliment Liberian President Joseph Boakais command of English.
Well, thank you, Trump said after Boakai spoke. And such good English, thats beautiful. Where did you learn to speak so beautifully?
Where were you educated? Where? In Liberia? Well, thats very interesting. Its beautiful English, he added. I have people at this table cant speak nearly as well.
English is Liberia's national language.
Reached for comment, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly called Trumps remarks a heartfelt compliment during a meeting that marked a historic moment for U.S.-Africa relations.....
Trump's comments to Boakai sparked some backlash online.
"Trump never misses an opportunity to be racist and wrong, and every day he finds a new way to be embarrassing," Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, wrote on X. "Asking the President of Liberia where he learned English when its literally the official language is peak ignorance. Im pretty sure being blatantly offensive is not how you go about conducting diplomacy"

A great DUer called him that, but, unfortunately, I am unable to find the original author at the moment.

Not a peaceful history, so much, but a fascinating one.
The Wikipedia article on Liberia tells the story pretty well. I first learned about it in 8th grade, by writing an essay about it. We got to choose a country for that homework assignment. I chose Liberia. Then I did some research in the school library. Fascinating.
If you're interested, I suggest the Wiki on it.
