Although the Planned Parenthood network is overseen by the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, it includes dozens of independent affiliates that directly provide care to patients.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington DC and Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains had notices on their websites alerting patients that they can no longer accept Medicaid, the US government’s insurance program for low-income people.

“With the passage of the reconciliation bill into law on July 4, 2025, Planned Parenthood health centers, including Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC (PPMW) centers, can no longer accept Medicaid coverage for care,” reads the statement on Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington DC’s website, which lists a number of ways patients can still find funding for care.

“This ‘defund’ provision is a cruel, harmful, and inhumane law that will strip health care from thousands of people in the DC metropolitan region and millions across the country.

into spinning off actual abortion services to other medical groups.

Not saying that is desirable, but it is one option if lawsuits don't work.

Planned Parenthood as a brand name is so reviled in the Talibornagain and Anti-choice circles that even if they divest providing abortions or contraception, the name alone will keep them on the hit list.
Planning Parenthood suggests female autonomy. That's not allowed in the He-Man Nationalist Oligarchy.

It has to do with how much Medicaid funding a location receives ($800k/year or more), which in practical terms applies only to most Planned Parenthood locations (but not all).

In this case at least, changing the name wouldn't make a difference.

of their services as abortions, so it's a relatively small part. Thus, if they stopped abortions I think their family planning services would be protected. Again, that depends on outcome of lawsuits and I'm not suggesting that is desirabe, it's just one way to continue operations.

The law signed by trump last week prohibits providers that offer abortions from accepting Medicaid reimbursements for any other reproductive health care services.

I would hate to PP have to "spin off" their abortion services in order to accept Medicaid.

Your second paragraph is partially right, unless I misread the law, i.e., the prohibition is only for abortion providers that receive $800,000/year or more in Medicaid reimbursements for other health care services.

The continued use of the name will politically doom them.
Look at ACORN, if you need an example.
The other political hit against them is that they are a non-partisan charitable organization.
In this era of rabid political polarization, Planned Parenthood will be on the chopping block for a) not "bending the knee" and complying with current political values and b) being considered a redundant service provider to a more acceptable (and profitable) politically linked service provider

have also been posting as of the start of July that they are no longer accepting Medicaid or Medicare patients (new ones, or accepting Medicare or Medicaid as an approved coverage from existing patients.) I fear many people are going to be without providers to get care across lots of specialties thanks to this terrible bill.
