No offense to the MN but they seem to have problems with bridges...

(55,674 posts)I think you have misplaced your blame. I hope it was not by reflex to avoid blaming American tugboat operators. I do not know the exact cause, but the vessel was under guidance and control of the tugboat there.

(798 posts)Actually, in ports and harbors, a harbor PILOT boards the ship and guides it into the harbor and berth, taking the wheel from the actual ship Captain.
The tugboats do not steer the ship, the pilot does.

(14,196 posts)Different weight disbursal and maneuverability than most modern ships that size.
While the Captain is ultimately at fault, there were significant errors made by the tugs and/or harbor pilot.

(9 posts)You can clearly see that the tug was not attached. Perhaps it had already cast off its lines, but it was seen racing to get into a position to slow/stop the runaway ship. Initial analysis seems to indicate the ship was stuck in reverse.

(59,866 posts)of the East River in NYC. I have a feeling that captain is gonna lose his/her command from hitting the Brooklyn Bridge. What the hell was he/she thinking? There's also the Manhattan Bridge and the Williamsburg Bridge to travel under on the East River...and I doubt the Williamsburg Bridge, is higher than the Brooklyn Bridge.

Those poor bastards standing in the rigging watching the bridge coming at them in slow motion...
