I knew they have been trying to sell it for 4-5 years but not that it was already 15 years old.
I urge all press when they refer to the Qatari jet to be more accurate. Its actually the 15 year old, used Qatari jet that Qatar unsuccessfully tried to sell off for many years.

(4,065 posts)Then Trump jumped at the offer. It reminds me of the probably apocryphal story of Native Americans selling Manhatten Island for a box of trinkets.

(20,364 posts)Pennies on the dollar as a cargo jet. That's really all the gas hog, 747's are good for unless you're dragging a presidential entourage around with you. And why the Qataris had a hard time unloading it for cash.

(2,349 posts)when he drools over this jet? It was up for sale in 2020 I believe. We only get 3 fucking dolls and he gets a $400 million jet? Congress needs to take the reigns back on this

(20,364 posts)The Qataris know their mark well. Slap a new paint job on an old, out of date jet and "give" it to a fool. Keeping it after he leaves office (if he leaves office alive - 8647) is totally impractical. A fool's idea.
747's are used as the AF1 platform only because of it's interior capacity, and the "big dick" theory. Only other practical use is as a cargo hauler.

(3,760 posts)...four hundred million dollars for it. I've been thinking this since the whole thing blew up. If the jet is really something nobody wants and giving it to Trump is really an alternative to paying to have it scrapped, then well that's just a typical Trump deal for you.

(320 posts)The car is a project that already has a lot of the heavy lifting done. It's already updated raditor and valve covers show the driveline is reworked and the body shows no rust. Unlike a out dated plane that would need more security sweeps and updated electronics then it's total value is worth and it would still be obsolete.

(7,704 posts)This thing always had zero chance of actually being AF1, it will wind up being mothballed in the desert with the rest of the obsolete 747 fleet. Ive seen more stories about this plane in the last week than anything else and its managed to go from a flying palace/luxurious bribe to worthless junk in that time lol.
I personally think theyre just trolling the media/left and love the attention this gets because it distracts from the more serious stuff theyre doing.

(5,994 posts)Is it not true that airplanes get stressed over time from the forces of take off and landing done repeatedly? So if true, that bucket of bolts will need considerable restoration just to make sure it is safe to use as AF1. That is to say nothing about replacement of every single bit of the upgraded safety and security equipment necessary to be worthy of flying our countrys highest officers.
And honestly, anyone who thinks tRump will allow that plane to really belong to the US government is delusional. He is salivating at the thought of having his very own flying palace. He figures everyone will conveniently forget about it and never notice when he takes it with him wherever he goes.
That gift will come with a huge price tag that trump intends to foist off on the tax payers

(24,783 posts)That airframe is virtually brand new.
It has very low hours compared to a similar plane that KLM or Lufthansa might be flying (two of the last major operators of 747's).
It was sold to a holding company on the Isle of Man in 2023

(273 posts)going to be the one flying it around I'm willing to skip the rebuilding and safety checks, just sweep it for spying tech and let the bolts fly out of it somewhere in the middle of the ocean .
