(54,841 posts)Claims of widespread fraud in Social Security were misleading, with fraud representing just 0.00625% of the annual budget, far less than what private companies like Mastercard or Visa would accept.

(849 posts)2 legitimately and 2 lied to get disability.
I believe there is fraud among those who claim disability. I've seen the qualifying forms (I helped one that was a legitimate claim).
For example, one illegitimate claim was based on depression. According to the form, you have to be unable to care for yourself and pretty much non functioning. She participates in local theater.
No fan of this administration, and I wish they would fund SS so fraudulent disability claims could be discovered.

Do you suspect someone of committing fraud, waste, or abuse against Social Security? You can submit a report online at oig.ssa.gov or contact SSA's OIG fraud hotline at 1-800-269-0271.

(27,647 posts)in society and in their community. Unless you are very close to someone collecting disability you can't possibly know their exact situation. I know people who look great on the outside but it's complete chaos on the inside while access to services they need are scarce.

(3,812 posts)A family member on disability for depression was judged by people for improving or seeming to be fine. Participating in life does not mean the medical problem does not exist anymore. All of the judgement from others delayed his finding a life balance in handling his condition.

(8,842 posts)And -- as someone who had to jump through all the hoops when helping my elderly mom apply for Medicaid, it took almost a year to get approved when she needed the care IMMEDIATELY -- I know that getting approved for disability is just as difficult, if not more so.
Rest assured that how many people are gaming the system through fraudulent means, there are probably 4x as many people that deserve the benefits and yet can't get them because of all roadblocks they put in their way to getting approved.

(4,456 posts)the women of the house work fulltime jobs while the men are on disability. Most have grown chlldren who no longer live at home. Some used attorneys to get their disabled status.
But I see them putting roofing on their mobile homes, carrying deer carcasses or 80-pound bags of deer corn around. Several have unreported side hustles doing well pump, air-conditioning or electrical repair work. One man said his monthly disability check is only $1,800/mo. and his wife's salary is $50,000/yr. plus bonuses. (I hadn't asked, he volunteered that info.)
Given the corruption in DC, I don't begrudge these people doing as well as they can, but do believe most fraud that is found in the system is likely related to disability. BTW, every one of these men voted for djt.
Ms. Toad
(36,464 posts)The ability to do some physical things, at a pace under their own control, does not mean they are not disabled. If, for example, their disability is PTSD it would not impair their ability to put roofing on their own home, carry deer carcasses, or 80 pound bags of deer corn around. But it might impair their ability to work around with others, or show up to a job regularly enough to maintain employment.
I have a disability - a back injury. I've had it since the 1980s. I'm not on disability, but I did receive a partial permanent disability payment for it under worker's compensation. My back injury is an atypical one - it bothers me when I a sitting - not when I'm active. I can lift 50 lbs without a problem - as long as I don't have to hang it off my right arm. But put me in the wrong chair for 15 minutes and I'm in agony for a month. Of course the worker's comp doctors tested for the more common manifestations of back injury.
Unless you were their attorney, or otherwise know them well enough to have seen their applications - and specific instances of lying - you don't know they are committing fraud. Life is hard enough for people with disabilities, without all of the spurious allegations that they are committing fraud in order to get the meager living allowance SSI offers.

(3,559 posts)You know, not just one, but several people on disability, all men, all with working wives.
And you watch them closely enough to see them working on roofs, hauling deer carcasses, hauling deer corn, and even working on the side.
I'd wager that the vast majority of people know one, at most, people who are on SSI disability. More likely, zero.
But it's good you're out there keeping an eye on a whole crowd of grifters!

(123,009 posts)documentation and doctor visits, and attended their hearings as a witness. The third was getting disability for a physical condition that, to my observation, was not that severe. However, as I pointed out to several people, her mental condition certainly warranted it, so I really didn't care, so long as she was covered somehow.
*This only refers to SSI. My history and acquintance with the VA system is far more extensive, and unpleasant.
Ms. Toad
(36,464 posts)to be a valid recipient of SSI?
Do you have a medical degree? Did you sit in on the evaluation process for this person? Are you their lawyer?
Invisible disabilities can be every bit as disabling as visible ones. And participating in social activities may mean the difference between life and death for someone with disabling depression, even if the depression is so severe that employment is not possible. You are not required to lock yourself away simply because you are receiving SSI. The test is the ability to participate in substantial gainful activity (not "unable to care for yourself and pretty much non functioning" . Substantial gainful activity, generally, is the ability to earn $1550 or more per month. My own participation in local theater on average, would not come close to that - even if I were paid, to address the specific allegation you made as to why this person is faking it.
(I am an attorney, I have a daughter with an invisible physical disability. She doesn't yet need SSI, but many of her peers with the same disease do. She also struggles with depression, which is notoriously hard to treat. From those perspectives, I know how hard it is to obtain SSI. I doubt either of the "illegitimate" claims are actually illegitimate.)

As an aside, I know someone whose wife is on SSDI. She is legitimately disabled and I believe it took over 2 YEARS from the time she first applied until the time it was approved. Yes, there is fraud committed in SSI & SSDI but it is far from a massive amount and not at all easy to get away with it.

(195 posts)Elon and the doge crew said. So that is what Vance is repeating. They (doge) made this claim to justify having people come to the office in person. They claim nearly 40 percent of the calls are made by people trying to steal others identity. I have no idea if this is true. If it really is, what is the best way to handle it? Ive never had to call for anything, so I have no idea whats required to change deposit status. I know people on ss. Ive never heard of any having (bank fraud) happen to them, have any of you?
