A big win for Democrats!
Trump tried to bully the Republicans into voting NO but it didn't work. They stood firm and voted with the Democrats.
On this one issue - good job by Rand Paul, Mitch McConnell, Susan Collins & Lisa Murkowski.

Four Senate Republicans join with Democrats to rebuke Trump tariff policy in key vote
The Senate adopted a resolution by a vote of 51 to 48 aimed at blocking the Trump administrations proposed tariffs on Canadian imports. The four Republicans who voted with Democrats were: Sens. Rand Paul, who cosponsored the resolution, Susan Collins, Mitch McConnell and Lisa Murkowski.
The move amounts to rare bipartisan pushback against Trump in the GOP-led Senate and comes after Trump criticized the measure and urged Republicans to vote against it.

(3,917 posts)Dems should just step aside and let Trump/GOP destroy themselves. When the economy tanks as a result of his tariffs - only then will voters have clarity on how terrible Trump is. Polls showed that voters believed the economy was Trump's strong point. Should that advantage erode, it's curtains for Orange Man.

Not everyone will survive these tarriffs and to ask them to sacrifice their livelihoods to make a point isn't fair.
We shouldn't fear that it won't be bad enough under Trump. It will be. We have to mitigate the damage where we can.

(7,600 posts)This is how you rally the electorate. Challenge Republicans in the House to stand up like the 4 did in the Senate. There isn't a down side to this, even if we lose, we win. Besides, we're going to need Republicans to stand up to Trump at some point.
Blocking tariffs is a very popular rallying point with citizens of all parties, and is a good starting point in generating majorities to reign in Trump's imperial presidency.

(4,576 posts)which Trump used as pretense for invoking the tariffs. It has teeth. Unfortunately, Trump will veto if the House passes, but it still is a huge victory and sends a strong message that multiple Republicans are not going to be rubber stamps for Trump on tariffs.

So it's a good vote, but not a breakdown along ideological lines.

(296 posts)At Mitch McConnell he bears the lions share of the blame for trump not going away and now he thinks he can make it right? I mean by all means speak out but where was this in 2021? Its because he is retiring and no longer cares. Which means all this time he hated trump and what he was doing but stood by for his own power. The redemption arc is a tough sell for me.

Paul said tariffs are bad for the country, bad for prosperity, bad for the economy.
Our Constitution was very specific that taxes tariffs are a tax taxes originate in the House, come to the Senate and then go the president, he said. They dont just go to the president and no one else. What kind of system would it be if all of our taxes and laws were passed by one person?

Wiz Imp
(4,576 posts)Trump can only legally impose tariffs on Canada due to the emergency declaration so this resolution would end Trump's ability to to unilaterally impose the tariffs. That's a big deal.

(4,576 posts)SO if this does pass the House, Trump will surely veto it. Regardless, it's still significant to show that there a multiple Republicans who do not support Trump's unilateral tariff policies.

(6,296 posts)as they can claim during reelection that they voted against tariffs.
Wiz Imp
(4,576 posts)So Now they pass bipartisan legislation which directly repudiates a Trump policy priority -it's an action of significant substance - pretty much as strong and meaningful of an action as it is possible for them to take at this point given their minority status across the board, and you still complain.
And this will have no impact on any Republican's election chances. McConnell is retiring, Rand Paul voters aren't going to be pleased he voted with Democrats and Collins & Murkowski are known quantities at this point. This vote will be meaningless to their voters.
radius777
(3,917 posts)Just step aside and let the GOP own this mess - and when the economy tanks the voters can find out.
