Whenever I get this comment about both political parties being the same, I calmly state "NO. They are NOT the same!"

Republicans see something bad happen to someone and say "That's terrible, and I hope that doesn't happen to me."

Democrats see something bad happen to someone and say "That's terrible, and what can we do to make sure that doesn't happen to anyone else?"

5. In most of the advanced world 'liberal' often means being in favour of smaller government, deregulation, free (not fair)

trade, privitisation, lowering taxes, anti-union stances, etc etc.

I never use the term to self-descibe, as I am (for the most part) against those things.

7. More along the centre to centre right plumb line. RW libertarians are generally more radical than most liberal parties.

LW libertarianism is the predominant form of libertarianism here in Europe, whereas US libertarianism is dominated by the RW forms.

Imho...Liberalism here in the USA is the best of FDR (& Elanore), JFK (seriously, see the video, film of his American University speech Summer '63; I think it ranked the wrong people), LBJ, maybe Bill Clinton at times, Obama at times.
