On Tariffs, Republicans Say We Must Trust Trump's Instincts

The same guy who thinks magnets don’t work underwater and that windmills cause ear cancer.

His instincts are worse than W’s gut when full of burritos.

It will get ugly.

What's crazy is that the only thing I've ever really agreed with Republicans on is Free Trade. They were the free market capitalists for forever. Tariffs were a dirty word to them.

Now the cover they're using is that these tariffs are in response to other countries' existing tariffs, but that's mostly not true. We actually have fair trade with most countries. Sure, we protect our auto industry, in return we let other countries protect some of their industries with tariffs. But it's mostly a series of trade deals that have created an incredible amount of wealth for the United States. How that wealth has been distributed is the issue, but that has little to do with our trade deals.

I don't think Trump knows what he's doing and I don't think there's a single serious economist who supports this ham-handed tariffs for all policy. And this wasn't even part of his first term and wasn;t that big a part of his campaign. Someone who wants to disrupt the global economy has gotten his ear.

In the last 150 years, free trade has been more successful at bringing about positive change than all the wars and the charities combined.

I keep pointing this out too. Nobody will ask these questions, i.e., why now and not during the first term? This goes for all the firings and whatnot. There's not many answers to that question and they all point to nefarious actions. It should be THE national conversation right now - WHY?

taking maybe by force ally countries, immigration deportations is a mess, the economy failing, and the eggs are too high.

Firing, laying off, destruction of departments, FEMA, healthcare, etc.

And plan to use the fake accounting of the tariffs to pass their revenue neutral tax cuts for the rich.

tariffs would work it will take years of planning and construction to start new steel and auto plants. Like Trump said he couldn't care less if car prices go up several thousand dollars.

Anybody who thinks companies especially car companies are going to invest billions to build factories here to evade tariffs are in dreamland. That cost along with increased labor costs would be greater than the cost with the tariffs.

lied and connived their way to power, I believe this administration intends to tank the US. The only reason I can imagine is that the goal is a global power grab.

No way can you dismantle effective agencies or fire every experienced, hardworking educator, scientist, economist, researcher, military leader or policy expert without adverse consequences.

Beyond comprehension is how any of the mental slugs in congress can use the "because he's a businessman" explanation for their acquiescence. They know full well he's been a lying, corrupt, ignorant loser all his life.
