AZ-SEN: Arizona's top court denies the Gallegos' plea to keep their divorce records sealed

The Arizona Supreme Court has denied a request from U.S. Congressman Ruben Gallego and Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego to extend a stay on the release of their divorce records in their latest attempt to fend off a legal fight with an out-of-state conservative news outlet.

The existing stay is set to expire Thursday.

The Gallegos, both Democrats, have accused the Washington Free Beacon, which sued to unseal the records back in January, of doing so with political motivations.

Both Gallegos are current elected officials and candidates for office in the November election. Ruben is running for a U.S. Senate seat and Kate is running for reelection as Phoenix mayor.

It was bad enough to feel like I was having to do this thing, and it would have felt a thousand times worse to have to publicly enumerate and justify all the painful and grubby details that were no one else’s damn business. He was losing everything to alcohol already (altho a few years later he finally got a grip, I am glad to say) — why add to that misery?

Whatever reason the Gallegos had for splitting, it isn’t anyone else’s business unless actual laws were broken. Marriage is a legal contract, and contracts can be ended. The religious part if any, is, again, nobody else’s business.

And to think there are rightwingers who want no-fault divorce outlawed.
