NH-GOV: N.H. governor candidates face tough questions on state's possible billion-dollar budget gap

Kelly Ayotte and Joyce Craig each took a stab Tuesday at an unwieldy question that’s sure to test the leadership skills of whoever wins their Nov. 5 showdown to become New Hampshire’s next governor.

The former US senator and former mayor of Manchester met for a debate hosted by the Mt. Washington Valley Economic Council in North Conway, where moderator George Epstein asked each candidate how they would handle the state’s next two-year budget cycle, which could present a fresh challenge.

“The budget here in New Hampshire has been pretty easy to balance for the past few years because the federal government has gone out and borrowed billions and billions of dollars and sent that to New Hampshire as COVID relief funds,” Epstein said. “That money is disappearing. It’s pretty much dried up.”
