Invitation declined

Recently my wife and I decided to decline a wedding reception invitation from the daughter of a first cousin. The event is on November 2nd, we’re already on edge about the election outcome (we are both postcard writers, phone bankers), and most of that side of my family are solidly MAGA, (the other side is quite liberal). Another determining factor is that one of the guests, the husband of the bride’s sister, is a wealthy Republican who is campaigning for the local county DA slot. He’s currently running disgusting and false ads against his Democratic opponent…of course. We are personally acquainted and have been cordial with each other in the past, but since he still supports the felon (he’s running on being the “law and order” candidate…yeah right), I know I will be triggered just by being in that setting. So we’re sending a gift and going to a concert instead. Wish it didn’t have to be this way but I want to avoid any potential embarrassing situations.
BTW, this is my first posting in GD in many moons. Love my DU community!

But good thinking people have no choice in the mater. How can you commiserate with active promoters of Democracy's destruction?

Now i did visit family (far right) in NC a couple weeks ago for 4 days and it's not easy, but i made it work without losing family members, but it's sure as hell not easy.

My family is divided that way.

My mother's side is solidly liberal,
my dad's side the polar opposite.

I really hate it being this way, but
that's just how it is.

It wasn’t always like this in my extended family. The dumpster really was the catalyst for the change in many of our relationships. Sad, really

Trump was the real game changer.

Bush was bad enough, but Trump..
well.. that was it for me.

…my experience is right wingers are the first to bring up politics, usually to inform you of the latest AngerTainment issue they’ve seen on Fox News. Liberals usually never start a political conversation. Not sure what’s the explanation for this phenomenon. Are we just too polite?

these last days before the election and I will be easily triggered to give my full throated opinion about the felon and his threat to democracy at the slightest provocation. Especially after a drink or two. To keep out of trouble I must avoid that scene entirely.

By that time “The Apprentice” should be on streaming. Just order delivery and watch-n-chill.

About your decision too. Life is too short to waste time putting ourselves into situations
that are unhealthy .

Avoiding toxic people (which magas are) and toxic situations is a foundation of good mental health. It’s possible you could go and have a good time, but the anxiety avoided in the lead-up is well worth a “regretfully…” response. More beef or chicken for someone else.

I remind them that our grandparents killed or built machines that killed fascists.

If they are supporting Trump they tend to keep it to themselves at family gatherings.

Those who can't take the heat don't invite us to weddings.

My dad's dad was a very conservative patriarchal son of a bitch, an Army Air Corp officer in World War II and a racist too, but I can't imagine him voting for some painted draft dodging clown like Donald Trump.

I have some of my grandfather's letters from his military service and figure he would have despised J.D. Vance as well.

My grandfather respected strong women too, which is probably how he got past his initial antipathy towards my wife.

I don't know if my grandfather would have actually voted for Harris, but he certainly would not have voted for Trump, which may be the way this election goes.
