All these articles for decades have referred to Oranginas gold toilet.
The written unspoken assumption in every case is that the toilet is made of gold
solid gold. Thats what everyone is supposed to consider.
Lets do some calculations:
Lets figure out how big a toilet is:
80 pounds of porcelain is 36,320 grams. The density of porcelain is approximately 2.4 so a toilets approximate volume is 15,133 cubic centimeters.
There are 16.4 cc in 1 cubic inch so a toilet is approximately 923 cubic inches. One ounce of 24k gold weighs 11 ounces so the toilet would weigh 634 pounds.
Todays spot price of gold is $2685 so the value of the gold in a 24k toilet is $1,702,290. Obviously a lesser percentage of gold would reduce the value however it would depend upon what the gold was alloyed with.
For a whole variety of reasons, I dont think so
Hard to believe he would make an untrue claim. I bet its not even gold leaf, I think its probably an alloy we used to call Tawny, used during the last huge price increase in the 1980s.
P.S. I did these calculations rather quickly. If I am in error please advise. Also, yes, I made some assumptions as to size.

(6,648 posts)With that said, I was in college and working graveyard at an exclusive club that cost a ton of money to be part of. Since it was graveyard and wasn't open yet, and given access to nearly everything, I took a piss in it just to feel how the wealthier felt about it. I felt no different.
