Donald Trumps presidential campaign on Monday used the occasion of Indigenous Peoples Day to attack Vice President Kamala Harris for her support of the Native American community. Trumps attacks were amplified by right-wing media outlets, like Fox News.
Indigenous Peoples Day is being celebrated this year on Oct. 14. In an email to reporters, the Trump campaign alleged that Harris wants to get rid of Columbus Day, which is celebrated on the same day.
Karoline Leavitt, Trumps national press secretary, said in a statement that Harris wants to cancel American traditions like Columbus Day. She added, President Trump will make sure Christopher Columbus great legacy is honored and protect this holiday from radical leftists who want to erase our nations history like Kamala Harris.
The campaign also posted a tweet with videos of Harris expressing support for the holiday, and said it was evidence that she had radical left Marxist beliefs.

(105,647 posts)Francis Xavier Cabrini--whose ties to the poor in NYC and Chicago are legendary, but she likewise built orphanages in Denver. She purchased land on Lookout Mountain for them to have a summer camp. It is a beautiful area to this day whether you are religious or a committed atheist. But the reason why I really like the holiday named for her, is that when she was canonized, she was made PATRON SAINT OF IMMIGRANTS!!!
So, again, while I likewise like Indigenous People's Day, someone should make TSF aware of WHY it is Cabrini Day in Colorado.

(13,317 posts)Who might have encouraged their communities to vote against Roosevelt as Italy threw in with the Axis.
Our old social influencer buddies, the anti-communist Knights of Columbus (they added "Under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance and the commonly used Bullet Point 10 Commandments) were the primary drivers of Columbus Day.
They didn't like Communists, but they also didn't like Germans, either. Catholics who didn't fall in with the Nazi party line were being arrested, and Mussolini was not just rounding up Communists, but setting himself up as an anti-democratic dictator; also against the KOC agenda.
Western Civilization has nothing to do with Columbus Day.

On edit, "Washington supporting your argument"? What AI autocorrect program turned "Was just" without a space between words into Washington?

Columbus didn't know where he was which is why we call the indigenous people "Indians" to this day.
"Columbus and his men enslaved many of these native people and treated them with extreme violence and brutality...While he was governor of what is now the Dominican Republic, Columbus killed many natives in response to their revolt, according to History.com. To prevent further rebellion, he would have the dead bodies paraded through the streets...The indigenous societies of the Americas were decimated by exposure to Old World diseases, crumbling under the weight of epidemic." -https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/12/us/christopher-columbus-slavery-disease-trnd/index.html
This is a man whose history was mythologized in our history books and movies with a persona that was pure Hollywood.
In reality he wasn't the first to set foot in the Americas from Europe and he was a greedy slaver and a murderer. Yeah, he was a great guy. No wonder Trump adores him.
