Man arrested after dog abandoned during Hurricane Milton

Kathryn Armstrong
BBC News

A man who allegedly left his dog tied to a post in floodwaters ahead of Hurricane Milton has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty, officials say.

The animal was rescued by Highway Patrol near a Florida highway on 9 October.

Bodycam footage posted online, which has been viewed more than 12 million times, showed the dog standing beside a wire fence in water up to his chest.

His former owner, Giovanny Aldama Garcia, was arrested on Monday, according to the state government's highway safety body.

FYI, the Bull Terrier is in foster care and doing very well. He's gotten many applications to adopt him and has been named Trooper in honor of the LEOs who rescued him. I wish that the penalty for animal cruelty was more than 5 years.

Half German Shepard and half boarder collie. Great dog.

to actually tie this to the original post. Sentence the owner to standing in cold, dirty water up to his chest for a week or more.

that he was trying to create a mitigating factor for himself with that lie.

He's failing to take responsibility for his actions just like he failed in his responsibility to care for his dog.

And that he's trying to blame some anonymous other person(s) for his decision to be heartless and cruel proves what an immature and twisted piece of shit he is.

Caught red handed, no doubt that he's guilty and still shirking his responsibility. Trying to win at playing the blame game. He needs to grow up. But he never will.

What he probably will do is much worse. I hope that the judge throws the book at him because this asshole is in training to be a wife beater and a child abuser, too.

I promise you. It always starts with cruelty to animals. He's well on his way down that road.

If I told you what I think should be done with the shitbag human who left that poor dog to drown, I would no doubt be banished from EU.

Absolutely inexcusable!

I hope this dog gets the BEST forever home of all time after, in effect, being water boarded by his previous piece of shit "owner."

Still no reason to abandon them.

I've lived my entire life, six decades plus, in a family/pack of difficult dogs.

We've got a bloody dingo in our house, sleeping on our bed, another misfit my wife brought home from the animal shelter, and dingo is the most rational dog I've known, not quite domestic, like myself.

Haven't figured out yet what bull terriers are about. The first one I met was on a beach in Malibu. He'd worn his teeth to the nubs fetching rocks but he enjoyed body surfing with the rest of us. I highly respected that.

But you never ever put your companion in mortal danger. Period. Full stop. Got a question about it then ask yourself if you'd tie up your kid and leave him out there under the same circumstances. If the answer is no the dog and kid goes where you go.

Im sick to death of animal cruelty.

Those of us still with rescue animals we've forever-homed with ourselves are even waking up to the need to make sure our pets are taken care of if they outlive us. Luckily, my arrangements are strong and solid... my babies, those who survive me, will be well taken care of and loved. It wasn't an easy thing to do... I want to make sure they would be well cared for after I'm gone, and that they'd not want for anything... and that the caretaker, himself, would be well cared for, as well. We demand accountability and responsibility from our politicians and judges, etc... we have to step up and be accountable for our priorities as well. And frankly, I would group animal cruelty laws in with everything else good we're fighting for. If we don't take care of the most vulnerable, how can we take care of the immigrants, the elders, the youth, the babes in good faith?

There's no excuse for that and your "compassion" is very misguided. It should be for the dog!

And it wouldn't have been a gentle death. The fact is, he would've either been killed by flying debris or drowned as the water was rising. The water was up to his chest even before the storm hit. If he was so desperate, he shouldn't have tied him up, trapping him and leaving him to his fate. And he gave up the right to reclaim him the second he tied that poor pup to the fence. To give him the benefit of the doubt, he's too stupid to have a dog.

It was one of those stories you never expect to hear anymore about. So good to hear they arrested that monster! It's doubtful that poor dog ever had a good life with a lowlife like him. May they match Trooper up with an awesome loving family that gives him the very best life.

Two and a half grand or more for him and only tried to get the dog back to sell it and recoup his money. He certainly didn’t show any love for the dog as his companion.

Look his mugshot, the telltale dead eyes speak volumes.

No quarter for that shit - that terrified dog would have slowly drowned to death.

Welcome to the rest of your life, Trooper.
