RW Activists Pushed False Claims About Election Fraud. Now They're Recruiting Poll Workers in Swing States.

Right-wing strategists still talk about what happened in Detroit in 2020, when poll watchers stood outside the absentee ballot counting center, banging on windows and shouting “Stop the count!” Conspiracy theories swirled that those volunteers had been kept out while something corrupt was unfolding inside. In fact, at one point the facility held almost double the number of permitted poll watchers of both parties.

But the theories continue spreading four years later. “They kick people out that are observers, and they put cardboard over the window, and you’re supposed to trust what’s going on behind the cardboard?” Lance Wallnau, a leading Christian right influencer, said at an Arizona tent revival in April.

Ahead of the 2024 election, activists have taken steps to get closer to the action. A coalition of activists on the political right, many of whom have promoted false claims about election fraud, is recruiting poll workers to administer the process themselves rather than watching from the outside. The groups are urging people to work at their local polling stations and to report perceived irregularities to those groups’ external hotlines — something that could risk violating the law.

“Poll watcher is the person where you get kicked out if chicanery happens,” Mercedes Sparks, who works for Wallnau, said at the same tent revival, explaining the recruitment initiative. “If you’re a poll worker, you’re the one doing the chicanery, so you can lock the door. You can kick everybody out.”

1. In Arizona, poll workers take an oath

to uphold the process the law and the Constitution. Poll observers do not take such an oath. If these right-wing poll workers violate the law, and their oath, they are subject to prosecution for the very election fraud they claim to be against.

as I'm concerned, let them have as many poll watchers and audits as they want. Eliminating the option of them screaming about cheating is the best way to diffuse it before it ever starts. Claims of election cheating are outright ridiculous. Just don't give them the space to make the claims by making absolutely open and transparent.

Cleta is a very well-funded lawyer who created the EIN to try to put hard-right Republicans in control of American elections. The group was active in 2020, and provided extensive training to foot soldiers in local election venues. They are better organized this time.

I met some of those foot soldiers as a volunteer ballot counting observer in 2020. They train and send people out to find reasons to file lawsuits against election officials at local levels, alleging misdeeds to muck up the elections.

You can volunteer to babysit these morans as election and ballot observers through your local party organization. It's a good way to spend quality time getting to know the disruptors in your community and have thoughtful Socratic dialogues. Don't be too hard on them. They are well-meaning but brainwashed.
