Trading shares of DJT was halted today on a steep plunge over 10% of the share value closing at just over $27/share and continuing to drop in after hours trading.
The last time halting was used on this stock was when Trump announced he wasnt selling his shares, an act that is probably illegal.
Then, on Sept 20th, the first day Trump could liquidate his equity, the price started dropping and volume shot to a record 20 million shares a day. That is a volume that had previously been unusual for the stock but then became the normal volume past the ominous date.
Over the last two weeks, the stock has slowly risen, without reason, on a volume in the 10s of millions a day, to today with a high of 32/share. Then, today around mid-day, volume skyrocketed and the stock price dropped so fast that trading was halted. There was no significant news for the company, and yet the volume was close to 100 million shares. Trump was granted 120 million for his stake in the company.

(3,248 posts)Trump is late for his rally in Atlanta tonight. I think he sold off as many shares as he could today, all for the sake of locking in a nice profit.

(3,443 posts)The reason is short covering.
Shares needed to be bought back to return them to the owners from whom shares were borrowed earlier to sell short.
Concentrated short covering can result in what is called a short squeeze, characterized by a sudden spike in price.
Since another drop has now occurred, this may signal that a new wave of short selling has begun.
