Non-Citizens Voting

The local paper published my Letter to the Editor:

Dear Editor:

With Hurricane Helene raging in the Gulf last week, Congressman Michael Cloud voted against extending funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. A week earlier, Congressman Cloud also voted against a spending plan to avert a government shutdown. His reason: Congress failed to pass his co-sponsored SAVE Act, which makes it a crime for non-citizens to vote.

There is no evidence of non-citizens voting and Cloud offers none. Attorney General Paxton has yet to indict anyone for the State crime and it’s already against federal law: Title 18 US Code Sec 611 makes it unlawful for an alien to vote in a federal election. Just to beat this dead horse some more, Texas requires a Birth Certificate to obtain a drivers license, which is the primary identification for voting.

If Congressman Cloud believes non-citizens are voting, he’s a fool. If he’s promoting this myth as a political strategy to suppress the vote of American citizens who look like immigrants, he’s worse.
