60. At least 10% are brainwashed.
Fri Oct 11, 2024, 08:36 PM
Friday

The brainwashing predates the rise of Rush Limbaugh in the mid-80's, but that marks a turning point that was accelerated with the rise of FOX News in the early 90's.

Sure, maybe 25% of the nation could always be counted out as hardcore racist xenophobes who think "government" is an evil that needs to be destroyed. But the fact that DT has a floor of 46% is the result of the vast, far-right extremist, multibillion-dollar decentralized network that has been blasting a firehose of falsehoods for more than 40 years. It's talk radio (and more recently podcasters), think tanks, and other "influencers," with FOX News as the behemoth at the center.

I lost my mother-in-law to FOX News in the early 2000's when she moved to Florida and started watching what "everyone" watched: FOX News. A formerly active Democrat, highly-intelligent woman (passed the bar at a time when women were unicorns in the profession) started spouting the hateful propaganda. She never recovered.

People across this country have lost friends and family to the brainwashing. Formerly loving, kind people brainwashed into a set of beliefs that leave them alienated from any sense of connection to their own government and eager to utterly destroy hard-won programs and policies that have improved their lives and the lives of their fellow citizens; beliefs that leave them hating those of us who believe our government and public institutions are ours to shape and can be wielded for our collective benefit.

We need more documentaries like the one below; more attention on the stories of people indoctrinated into the far-right cult and the pain of those they leave behind; more stories from “recovering” extremists.

If we don't take this on as a nation and figure out how to reach and deprogram people, we will keep losing them to a cult that is on track to becoming a majority force.

But now we have a sick felon who is giving red meat to his base, to cause trouble. One ray of hope we have President Biden in the WH. That's a comforting thought. President Biden is very aware that there will be violence before or after the election.

I have a hard time believing that a majority of the country will vote for that despicable POS. But then I watch a ‘man on the street’ interview and realize how unbelievably stupid and/or gullible a lot of our fellow citizens are. Add in the fact that the Republican Party and its parasites will literally do anything to take over the country, and it’s very concerning. But I’m trying to stay optimistic. Because of the stakes.
Because of the actual/effective margins of the past 2 presidential elections (several tens of thousands of voters in only a handful of states both times)
Because American voters have absolutely shown their ass over and over again over the past decade-plus.
Because of the ineffectual -- when not downright corrupt -- performance of the supposed guard rails and umpires over the same time period.

2012 was close but all the swing state polls were pointing to an Obama victory, even when the national polls were showing a super close race. Like, go back and look at the Pennsylvania polls from October. On this date in 2012, Obama led Romney by an average of 4.5 points and 4.4 points in Michigan.

This election feels a lot like 2004 and I'm just hoping we're the Republicans this time around.

It is not very healthy for me. I am unable to control it. I try to do things to distract. Not very successful.

It feels good knowing I already sent my ballot back and the county received it. I think Harris/Walz will win but knowing so much is at stake makes me very nervous.

is that I’ll fall asleep in the small hours (I’m on the other side of the pond) and miss part of the excitement of Kamala’s unfolding landslide.

96. My brains can't handle it, won't think about it too much. Outcome can't be helped because of non-voters and bad voters.

I'm a Precinct Chair, so we support all the candidates on the ticket. I just prepared 90 packets with sample ballots. I have to go to 550 homes this cycle. When I get up tomorrow, I will go to door to door. Then I have a blockwalking event with another candidate. I also prepare lists for other volunteers. It keeps me out of trouble. Keeps me preoccupied.

No matter what the outcome, I'm afraid that there will be violence coming from the cult. I live in a very comfortable blue area of Michigan but that could make us a target. My plan is to vote early and then hunker down.

I cry some days! Who even wants to think about a Trump presidency? My town is full Maga.
N.E. Ohio no Harris signs!
