Update: The dog rescued by @FHPTampa is safe and receiving care. Troopers brought him to a vet, where he was examined for injuries and received a clean bill of health.

(60,492 posts)and wondered if he'd gotten out of someone's house and maybe got tangled up there because he looks well fed. Bless that cop because the dog was scared and growling so he could have been bitten.

(4,950 posts)If someone was trying to get rid of a dog, that would be an odd way of doing it.
He could have escaped and was dragging a leash which got caught in the fence.
Is it know for certain that the pooch was actually "tied" to the pole?

(11,377 posts)A major hurricane is coming in and you tie a dog off-road to a pole? He was already standing in nearly chest-high water. Could have easily drowned or been injured/killed by flying debris.
No excuse for something like this. None.
to the police who rescued him.

(1,811 posts)That's a statement that I can agree with. Simply proclaiming that people are evil doesn't make sense. "People" made the effort to help that dog. after all.
Also, there are plenty of people who are good to animals but shitty to their fellow human beings. Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs is fictional, but Adolph Hitler is not. And Hitler was known for loving dogs.
I grew up in a home where people were verbally abused and sometimes hit. Nobody was ever mean to the dog.

(29,520 posts)People dump dogs all the time here. They like to dump at dog parks etc.
One woman was on Nextdoor because her dog had escaped numerous times. Then she tried to rehome her dog but people started harassing her for wanting to rehome her dog. The next morning, the dog was found at the dog park and she had deleted her Nextdoor account.
The dog above is not a "small breed", it's a bull terrier and they may not have been able to find a place that would take it.

(4,047 posts)taken him in, for at least the length of the storm. Yes, it may have cost them some money... but pets ARE family. Would you leave your child tied to a pole... that far away from the road!... in the midst of the oncoming storm?
Some people absolutely don't deserve to be pet owners. The critters give us their unconditional love, loyalty, faith, and respect. How sad that some people can't return even a 10 1/2 of that back to the animals... while many of us scrimp on other needed things to ensure our pets have the vet care, enough food (that they'll eat!), and other necessities.
We childless cat ladies have our own attitude about these things, I know... but I'll bet most dog parents feel the same.
I have a t-shirt I wear nearly all the time when I go to town. It says: I used to be a people person, until people ruined it!

(29,520 posts)The dog appears to be a pure bred.
I see so much animal dumping here. No one fixes their pets. People don't take care of their animals and encourage them to be aggressive. Too many people are also getting killed by pit bulls. Monday a one year old was killed by a pit pull. It's bad here. Too many irresponsible people.

(4,047 posts)and we've boarded our cats (and 2 dogs) with our vet. One time we took the dogs with us, and swore a trip that long we wouldn't do it again. Most vets will board pets... it's not free, but its not as expensive as a daycare or other facility with boarding, and the only thing you have to make sure you have is they have to be up to date on their shots, and have a bordetella vaccine. We did this both when I lived in Texas, and also here in KS. Such two disparate states as these, I can't image it wouldn't happen elsewhere. We found it easier to board with a vet than find a hotel who'd take the dogs (and sneak the cats in!).

(29,520 posts)I know most motels will accept "small dogs" only. A bull terrier wouldn't be considered a small dog.

(4,047 posts)Up here, I have a 150 pound loveable mutt who's broken my leg once already! (LOL) Traveling with cats is even worse, tho. I once had my manx somehow slip out of the car (I'd let her out of the carrier for a few minutes peace from the caterwauling). This was in just outside OK City, OK. Luckily, I had a trucker who pulled over and helped me corral her back into the car. I was never so scared and devastated and p'o'd at myself at the same time! But it was kind of funny seeing this 250 pound trucker running through the fields at the side of the road yelling, "Here, kitty, kitty, kitty!" All I can say is thank goodness for CB-Radios back then!
LeftInTX
(29,520 posts)I never heard the term "caterwauling", so I looked it up. We always thought she was car sick. We would go up to our parents' cottage and about 3/4 way through the 200 mile trip she would start that. (Didn't need the trailer for that trip) There weren't any hills or anything that would cause it.

Awful either way.
I wonder if that leash has any human DNA on it?

(29,560 posts)what some people do. the most charitable thing I can say about that is the people probably felt it was his best chance to be rescued. Why they were unable or unwilling to keep him with them I'm trying not to judge too harshly, because i just don't know.
