New York Times opinion columnist David French accused House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) of forgoing the biblical value of honesty despite claiming last month the Bible dictates his entire worldview.
In a column published in the Times on Sunday, French, who describes himself as a Never Trump evangelical conservative, pointed to Johnsons leadership of a legal effort behind former President Donald Trumps bid to overturn the 2020 election.
There is a reason that effort is called the Big Lie. It was one of the most comprehensively and transparently dishonest political movements in American history. And Johnson was in the middle of it, French wrote.
The Bible does not contain guidance on immigration or foreign policy, French wrote, but it does condemn dishonesty, it does condemn cruelty, and if there is a clear theme that echoes throughout its pages, its one that MAGA Mike Johnson and his legion of evangelical supporters should take to heart: The ends do not justify the means.

Actually, the Bible does say something about immigrants, though: You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. My experience has been that men may be a lot more rightwing than the women.

(13,731 posts)People who lie can't be trusted. Period. End of story. Lying is never the worst of their sins but it's a handy signature of corruption. Even the Bible says something about a good tree doesn't bear bad fruit and a bad tree doesn't bear good fruit. Lying is bad fruit and it's the surest way to identify a bad tree.

(43,980 posts)One zealot instructing another zealot about honesty. When you can morph your instruction book into anything you want it to be honesty is irrelevant, regardless of what Republican you support.
I honestly do understand Mr French. If you are an evangelical conservative you are on par with Johnson on the problem scale.
