1. 'What happened and continues to happen is forced displacement': UNRWA chief
Mon Oct 30, 2023, 04:04 PM
Oct 2023
Lazzarini tells the Security Council that Israel’s “relentless bombardment” of Gaza has led to an “unprecedented” level of destruction.

“Now, civilians remaining in the north are receiving evacuation notices from the Israeli forces, urging them south to receive scarce humanitarian assistance. But many, including pregnant women, people with disabilities, the sick and the wounded, are unable to move,” he said.

“What happened and continues to happen is forced displacement.”

Lazzarini added that hundreds of thousands of forcibly displaced Palestinians in Gaza are living in “appalling” conditions, with limited food and water.

“Hunger and despair are turning into anger against the international community and in Gaza, the international community is better known as UNRWA.”

2. 'Nowhere safe' for Palestinian patients to go amid Israel's hospital evacuation push: UN official
Mon Oct 30, 2023, 04:21 PM
Oct 2023

Lisa Doughten of the UN humanitarian office (OCHA) says “life hangs by a thread” for premature Palestinian newborns and patients relying on dialysis at hospital in the Gaza Strip that are facing a lack of fuel.

“Some 9,000 cancer patients are not receiving adequate care,” she told the Security Council, expressing concern over the Israeli military’s warnings to evacuate health care facilities in the besieged enclave.

“There is nowhere safe for these patients to go, and for those on life-support and babies on incubators, moving will certainly be a death sentence.”

3. Lack of clean water and safe sanitation is on the verge of becoming a catastrophe
Mon Oct 30, 2023, 05:18 PM
Oct 2023
Unicef executive director Catherine Russell, at the UN’s security council on Monday, said the lack of clean water and safe sanitation is on the verge of becoming a catastrophe in Gaza. More than two million people are in “dire need” as what little clean water remains in Gaza is quickly running out, she said.

We estimate that 55% of the water supply infrastructure requires repair or rehabilitation. Only one desalination plant is operating at just 5% capacity, while all six of Gaza’s water-waste treatment plants are now non-operational due to a lack of fuel or power. She said her agency was doing its best to reach all children in need, but that the delivery of humanitarian aid is now “extremely challenging”.

Some of her staff have lost close family members, including spouses and children, she said. She added that she was also grieving with the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa), who have said that 63 of their staff have been killed in Gaza since 7 October.

The situation grows worse by the hour, and without an urgent end to the hostilities, I am deeply afraid for the fate of the region’s children.

5. Probably tomorrow - they are drafting new resolutions
Mon Oct 30, 2023, 05:46 PM
Oct 2023

Gabriel Elizondo
Reporting from the United Nations in New York

This emergency meeting of the UN Security Council (today), called by the United Arab Emirates, is expected to happen at about 3pm local time (19:00 GMT).

The UNSC is expected to be briefed by top UN officials in the region from the UNRWA in Gaza, as well the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

We are hearing that Malta and the UAE are working on another draft resolution behind the scenes for the UNSC. Already four drafts have been voted down, or vetoed since this conflict began.

But we’re hearing that the 10 elected members of the UNSC are working on another draft resolution urgently, given the escalation and trying to get that to a point where perhaps it could come to a vote in the next day or two.
