Mike did not actually adopt his "adopted son"

... Corinne Day, Johnson’s communications director ... told Newsweek that the Johnson family did not formally adopt Michael because of the “lengthy … process,” and declined to say whether Michael used the same surname as the family ...

There are too many people in this world who are full of it. It’s depressing.

I worked with an organization partly funded by a church - and this was not unusual.

Sarcasm...
Amy Coney Barrett adopted 2 kids from Haiti, legally as far as I know.
I thought that was odd when I heard about it. And John McCain's adopted daughter is from Bangladesh.

I guess it's a thing because their churches encourage it.
But why didn't Mike finalize the adoption? My guess, if the child remains in foster care the family gets paid and the child gets benefits, and the family doesn't owe the foster child an inheritance. These conservative Christians know how to work the system.

When they were promoting the book and eventual movie. They said they adopted him. The wife charity website referred to Oher as her adopted son even after he filled a lawsuit against them.

Once the lawsuit made the rounds. It was revealed they never completed the adoption process and at most were legal guardians.

Johnson has used his "adopted Black son" against reparations and other issues, multiple times.

The closeness in their age also stinks like Gaetz and his "adopted son".

Think. Again.

So in other words, fine enough to use when needed as a prop, not good enough to actually be seen with or you know - go through all that paperwork.

Now that Gaetz is married, his "son", Nestor has disappeared.

I'm old enough to remember when Rick Scott was running for governor and he "adopted" a shelter dog long enough for a photo op and a campaign ad, then he took the dog back to the shelter. I'm sure that Nestor and Michael have received similar treatment.
