His replacement may be worse, much worse. Not sure we did the right thing hanging him out to dry.

10. If McCarthy wasn't willing to make any guarantees to work with Democrats, there was no reason to save him

(Not that he could be trusted to keep his word in the first place, of course.)

Bear in mind that McCarthy's replacement will have to deal with the exact same problems -- a razor-thin majority and a deeply divided GOP caucus. And if McCarthy wasn't willing to cut a deal with Democrats even in order to save his own ass, no other Republican is going to cut a deal with Democrats in order to get any actual governing done. So whomever takes over is likely to be just as ineffective.

Meanwhile, the GOP will now have to waste time trying to elect another leader, all while giving the country another long, hard look at their complete ineptitude.

13. I don't think the House GOP is deeply divided.

216 Rs voted with McCarthy and only 8 against. That is about 4%. Yes, razor thin. But no R or D could make deals with the other party and have any credibility as Speaker. It just is not possible.

15. Fair point

That was 216-8 for McCarthy though, and he’s not running again. It remains to be seen if someone else can get level of support, especially now that the GOP is in chaos.

That said, the answer is probably yes, and they will eventually come together behind someone else. I still think it’s highly unlikely that it will be a nice smooth process that unfolds without any additional drama, or infighting, or behind-the-scenes dealmaking that ends up causing even more problems for them down the road.

Not sure McCarthy could have worked it out but I suspect his replacement will likely be worse. Hope I’m wrong but I don’t see a clear way forward.

If I know the former Speaker, he'll fill up the luggage with Rice-a-Roni when no one's looking.

They need to hire an exorcist for the entire party.

sing Take This Job and Shove It on the House Floor. He should have done it immediately after the vote.
