(96,882 posts)What I'm not looking for is another opinion from someone with no particular knowledge of politics or media. Especially if the presumption is she's saying something I'm supposed to already agree with.

(15,279 posts)These immigrants come across the border and turn themselves in because our LAW says that they get due process if they come here and ask for asylum.
Instead the media reports on immigrants 'flooding across the border' without mentioning that little fact.
Bottom line, our H1B visa program has a national cap of 85,000 people, 20,000 of whom must have the equivalent of a graduate degree in their own country. These are skilled workers, nurses, software people, accountants and others. This is absurd because our native population isn't growing fast enough to supply all the workers for new jobs created by economic growth and my own city, greater metro Denver, could absorb all 85,000 of these people today, right now.
The structural scarcity of labor is hurting businesses throughout the nation, and what we need most is a business-friendly immigration policy. The Republicans call themselves the party of business, but they cannot have it both ways, because their xenophobia is devastating to American economic growth. We went from 11% foreign born people in the US labor force to over 23% this year. So it's happening. And there are projected to be at least 1.2 billion climate refugees fleeing the equatorial belt as it gets too hot to live - by 2050 according to Zurich Insurance. Others put this higher. We can either plan for this or have chaos and war. Where is this story showing up?
Biden allowed work permits for half a million Venezuelan immigrants in the country, which really helped businesses mainly in New York and the media presented him as being 'pressured' by New York to make that happen. But you know what? Biden and Democrats are well aware of this issue of labor scarcity, but the media mentioned this only as an aside.
And look at the whole Hunter Biden thing. Honestly I absolutely do not care about Hunter Biden. I care about my HEALTH CARE DEBT. I care about my grandkids having to do duck and cover drills for active shooters in their elementary schools. I care about the dearth of childcare, and I care that kids in my state have over $28.5 billion in student debt.
To my mind, our media could be better by reimposing a 21st century Fairness Doctrine to replace the one the snake Reagan killed in 1987. Americans deserve the truth, Babylon Sister, and our media is corporate owned. This means that the fiduciary responsibility of their executives is ONLY to generate shareholder profits, not truth. I subscribe the the Guardian, the NYT and get lots of my news from here.
Honestly, the ignorance of Americans is hanging like a sword of Damocles over our republic. Why? We've had 35 years of post-Fairness Doctrine corporate-funded propaganda.
I mean, look at the Fed. Oh, they are quasi-governmental, we say, but that really isn't the truth. The truth is they are Wall Street bankers and they all know each other. They have tried to control inflation by reducing the money supply through making it harder for regular people to borrow money. This, they hope, will lower demand for goods and services and cause layoffs. The theory is the labor market will then systematically drive down wages. God knows we wouldn't want Wall Street to give up any profits to control inflation. Nope. It's the workers' fault. But people like Barra...well I won't go into that.
And what about Elon Musk's treason. He aided and abetted Russia by turning off his communication satellites when Ukraine, our ally, was mounting an attack. This is TREASON. Why is the media not pounding on that? Oh...shareholder profits! And after all, Musk is in the 'billionaire club.' Gosh, he's gotta be a good guy, bigger than life itself, right?
And why does the media never report the actual facts about the 2017 tax cut? My tax refund was CUT IN HALF this year over the year before. I'm getting screwed, and millions of other middle class Americans are as well. That's fucked up.
Why doesn't the media ever report on the massive subsidies of oil and gas? I mean pound on it on network news, not on a Maddow podcast or on Joy Reid. I mean the nightly news.
And then Musk just fired the whole X staff who was charged with identifying foreign attempts to influence our elections. Where is that news? It would be nice, wouldn't it, if AM talk radio had to report both sides, wouldn't it? I mean the corporate takeover of this republic was planned 50 years ago by Lewis Powell, and the media never even mentions that.
Sorry for the rant, but our media is the victim of Wall Street's twisting of truth for the sake of generating shareholder profits. The profit motive is in direct conflict with our interests as patients, and as consumers of news. In the days when I was a kid, we had Cronkite, Huntley and Brinkley, and in my dad's day Murrow. Those were giants. Purveyors of actual truth. When Tet happened, Cronkite came on the air and told the truth about how Nixon was lying.
It's just depressing is all. Because most of us on here are fairly well educated, and know how to ferret out truth. Many in this country don't. This is why Trump could actually win and end our democracy for good. Then we'd be truly fucked. What media outlets are pounding on that? And healthcare debt? The cause of 2/3 of personal bankruptcies.
Sigh.

(42,770 posts)The way 1/2 Americans think? The way the media covers the election?
The ONLY way the for-profit media will change is through their pocketbook. Reduction in viewership.
How could we make that happen? Huge organized effort? Would love that to happen

(25,351 posts)Forget the term "fake media." They are tabloid media spewing out tabloid news. Most of broadcast media are the equivalent of The Enquirer, on air instead of in print.
